A Few Notes From Tonight

What a crowd in the Jaw tonight... fans were into the game tonight!

50/50 was over $12,000... and a Regina fan won it....

The fan bus is full for tomorrow... look out Regina!

Warriors Sneak by Pats

The stage was set for a intense battle at the Civic Center. Two teams. A long history of hockey and a long standing rivalry came face to face as two teams look to fight their way to playoffs. One team, a top 5 contender; while the other attempts to grab hold of a playoff spot after a two year drought.
In a sold out building, fans wall to wall, the teams took to the ice for game 4 between the two. What would game four have in store? The Pats got on the board first, off of a too many men penatly by the home team. A high sticking call against the Pats resulted in a Dylan Hood power play goal only minutes later. The Pats would score one more before the first twenty minutes were over from Andrew Rieder. 2-1 Pats to end the first.

Second period brought on a goal a piece. Antonin Honejsek scored for the tribe. Garrett Mitchell took a nasty checking from behind penatly on Morgan Rielly, sending him to the box for 4 minutes. Shayne Neigum managed to score short handed to give the Pats a one goal lead. 3-2 Regina to end the second period.

The third period was a change of tide for the tribe. A power play goal from Dylan Hood followed by a Sam Fioretti marker made it a 4-3 game in the last few minutes. Collin Bowman ended up in the box in the dieing minutes sending the Pats on a 6-4 advantage. Thomas Heemskerk and the Warriors D managed to keep control of the game and take it 4-3.

First star of the game honors went to Dylan Hood, second star Tony Honejsek and hardest worker Andrew Johnson.

Game Notes from the Pats:

Tonight is the beginning of a crucial home and home series for both the Pats and the Warriors as they renew a great rivalry. The Warriors have held up their part by winning 10 of the past 11 games including the last one back on December 28th, and it was a wild night at the Brandt Centre as the Regina Pats and the Moose Jaw Warriors played in a game that harkened back to the early 80’s. The Warriors were able to hold off the blue and white 9-6. The Pats were able to outplay and outshoot the Warriors, but Spencer Edwards and Antonin Honejsek each had a hat trick. For the Pats, Thomas Frazee scored twice, while Jordan Weal had a goal and 2 assists.

Last Action
The Regina Pats pushed the Medicine Hat Tigers to the limit in a fantastic hockey game that saw the Pats fall 4-3 to the Tigers. Jordan Weal and Garrett Mitchell picked up a goal and an assist in the loss while Matt Hewitt kicked away 24 of 28 Tiger shots. The Pats were able to generate 8 power plays but only able to cash in on one.

John Chisholm School Visit.... Overcoming challenges

Good morning!
Warriors Spencer Edwards, Quinton Howden and Jesse Paradis stopped in at John Chisholm School this morning for a talk on overcoming challenges. Great job by the players, having a real talk on challenges like alcohol and drug abuse and everyday challenges.

The players shared ideas on how to overcome a challenge and challenges they have faced. The Warriors made it to one of the students "last" days at JC, once the students have completed the required work and attendance, they can go back into high school. Congrats to one of our friends who have worked very hard to get where he/she wants to be.

The visits are very eye opening and I truly believe not only benefiting the students but also the players in attendance. We provided a clip of Warrior great, Theo Fleury talking about overcoming challenges and motivation. The team donated a signed Fleury book, "Playing with Fire" to JC.

Hats off to everyone this morning!

Couple Thoughts

Have to give props to the Swifty last night. Charlie Horse did a great job of banging that "annoying" drum of his (if your cheering for the opposition). The music in Swift is always great. The Eagle 94.1 does a stellar job of the tunes.

This morning three Warriors helped out with a promotion for the Humane Society we have set up for February. It is going to be a ton of fun. The photos are awesome and hopefully we can help out our local humane society in a BIG way.

The Warriors will be over at the Kinsmen Sportsplex tonight from 7-8 pm for a Wellness Skate... encouraging youth to get moving and make healthy choices. Come out, grab an autography and get moving!

This weekends Pats matchup... only 125 tickets left... they are going to fly off the counter, so don't wait if you want to be here.

The Warriors will visit John Chisholm School tomorrow. The topic of discussion is going to be overcoming challenges, some which can be major challenges like drugs and alcohol or maybe just staying in school. The players do a FANTASTIC job at sharing and talking with the students at the alternative school.

Sunday the Warriors will be at Sobey's for hockey card signing. It's your chance to bring down your full set of cards and get them all signed up. 2-4 pm the players will be in store on Thatcher.

Another note, I truly think we have one of the best radio broadcast in the WHL. James Gallo is second to none. Agree?

It's Everyone's Favorite Matchup this Weekend

It's been many weeks since the Warriors faced off with the neighbor Pats. The Warriors are 3-0 against the Queen City kids and will look to clinch the series with four points on the line this weekend.

The Pats are making a drive for the playoffs, losing close games to both Lethbridge and Medicine Hat this week. The young Pats are hungry for a play off berth and will bring to to town Jordan Weal.

The Warriors are flying high, winning four of their last five games. After January closes up, the tribe will face off with Saskatoon three times in February along with two key match ups with Red Deer and Medicine Hat. The Warriors will be looking to nab the four points and journey their way up the standings.

Tickets are going fast with under 125 tickets left for Friday. If you dont have yours, get them online:

Get in your seat early for a special puck drop with an organization that is very close to the Warriors hearts, Hunger in Moose Jaw.

Heemskerk Holds Warriors in for a Win

The Warriors visited the Broncos Tuesday night. On a downward slide, the Broncos were looking to pull themselves out of a losing streak and work at holding off teams looking to jump into a playoff berth.

First period seen only nine shots for the Warriors; but when 2 of those 9 go in... it kicks off a great night for the Warriors. Cody Beach and Antonin Honejsek scored in the first 10 minutes on Mark Friesen.

Second period, only 30 seconds in, Taylor Vause scored followed by a Quinton Howden marker for a 3-1 score. A second Broncos goal brought the home team within one. Dylan Hood managed the fourth and final Moose Jaw goal in the third. Pressing hard, with Friesen on the bench for the final two minutes, Justin Dowling squeaked one past Heemskerk for a 4-3 final.
Thomas Heemskerk went 53/56; Swift Current shot 22 shots in the third period alone. The tribe went 2/6 on the power play and 5/5 on the penatly kill.

We toured around the great folks at SHAW and WHL Commuications Director, Cory Flett for their first look at the new Multiplex.

Things are coming along nicely. The ice surface itself is the major focus today along with dry walling the suites. It looks fantastic! I think the gentlemen agreed with us.

CLASH CANCELLED

Moose Jaw, SK.--- The 4th Annual Trans-Canada Clash between the Regina Pats and Moose Jaw Warriors alumni has been cancelled for the afternoon meeting of WHL alumni. The event was planned for Saturday January 29th in conjunction with the Warriors and Pats WHL matchup in the evening.

“We are quite disappointed to cancel this year’s Trans Canada Clash”, commented Corey Nyhagen, Director of Business Operations for the Moose Jaw Warriors. “Circumstances like this are unpredictable at times, especially when we are dealing with schedules of our alumni. Unfortunately this year, not enough former players could accommodate the Clash date,” he added.

The Warriors relationship with their alumni is stronger then ever after having many returnees visit Moose Jaw this past summer. “Our alumni are very dedicated to the Warriors organization and its success, as seen in the return of previous players for both the Warriors & Legends Hall of Fame and Annual Men’s Golf tournament this past summer,” stated Nyhagen. “We appreciate their support of many events throughout the year,” he added.

With a new facility on the horizon and an enthusiastic group of Alumni, a game between WHL Alumni is an event the Warriors look forward to welcoming into a new brand arena. “I don’t see this as an end to the Trans Canada Clash,” commented Nyhagen. “Former Warriors like Mike Keane, Theoren Fleury and many others have said they would love to play for their Moose Jaw fans again; it just wasn’t able to happen this year”, he added. “Regina is our longest running rival in the Western Hockey League and we would love to continue the fierce competition in an alumni event,” commented Nyhagen.

The Warriors will be taking on the 2010/11 Regina Pats in a home and home series starting January 28th and carrying through to the 29th. For tickets to the nearly sold out game in the Crushed Can, call 694-5711 or go online www.mjwarriors.ca. The Warriors will be taking the Pizza Hut Fan Bus to the Saturday night game. Warriors Visit Diversified Services

Collin Bowman, Kendall McFaull and Quinton Howden stopped by Diversified Services in Moose Jaw today for a game of floor hockey and autographs. Diversified Services is an agency that provides support to intellectually-disabled people in the community and help achieve the goal of ensuring individuals are able to participate as fully as possible in society.

v. Edmonton
Tonight is the Warriors and Edmonton Oil Kings second meeting of the season and first this season at the Civic Centre. The Oil Kings won their only meeting 3-2 October 3rd in Edmonton. Moose Jaw was 3-1 against Edmonton last season and is 4-2 at home against the Oil Kings in the last five years.

As for the Visitors....

WHEAT KINGS HARVESTED: An unbelievable flurry of five goals in one minute and 55 seconds by all four forward lines during the second period highlighted the Oil Kings' 9-0 domination of the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday night at Westman Place. After a scoreless first, the Oil Kings put six on the board in the second and added three more in the third to destroy the Wheat Kings for their second straight win, following up a 4-1 decision over the Pats on Friday in Regina. Edmonton has now scored nine goals in a game twice this season. Three different Oil Kings forwards scored a pair of goals against the Wheat Kings, as LW Dylan Wruck tallied his 22nd and 23rd of the season to take the team lead, while RW T.J. Foster scored his 16th and 17th, and C Colton Stephenson notched his second and third. Lost in the offensive explosion was G Laurent Brossoit who posted a 25-save shutout — his second goose egg of the season. The Oil Kings look to make it three wins in a row tonight in Moose Jaw.

SEASON TO DATE: The Oil Kings are 22-19-0-2 on the year and have won 15 of their last 22. They’ve had two modern franchise record five-game winning streaks this season, including the second of those streaks in December, as they dominated Brandon 8-4, beat the Hitmen 5-2, squeaked past Kelowna 2-1, pounded Regina 9-3 and beat Swift Current 3-1. They dropped two straight before the holiday break, 1-0 to Chilliwack and 4-2 in Saskatoon, before beating Lethbridge 3-2 on Dec. 27 and 5-4 in a shootout on Dec. 29. They closed out 2010 with a 4-2 win over Brandon on Dec. 31. The Oil Kings started 2011 with a 2-1 loss to Kootenay on Jan. 2, a 5-2 loss in Medicine Hat on Jan. 4, a dominant 7-1 victory over Regina on Jan. 8, a 5-2 defeat to Kootenay on Wednesday, Friday’s 4-1 win in Regina and Saturday’s 9-0 thrashing in Brandon.

DEADLINE DEAL: The Oil Kings were part of one transaction prior to last Monday’s WHL Trade Deadline, as they acquired RW Mark Reners from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a fifth-round WHL Bantam Draft pick in 2012. Reners is an 18-year-old from Pincher Creek, AB, who was selected by Lethbridge Hurricanes in the first round (18th overall) of the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft. He started the 2010-11 season in Lethbridge and scored six goals and five assists in 20 games before getting traded to Vancouver, where he played 11 games and scored two goals and one assist. Reners has scored one goal and three assists in three games since the trade.

Off the Ice:
Tonight Tony Honejsek and Morgan Rielly will be signing autographs post game!

OUTDOOR GAME READY TO ROCK

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / THURSDAY, JANUARY 13th, 2011Excitement Builds For Rockstar Outdoor Hockey Classic
By Jesse Watts, whl.ca The first outdoor game in Western Hockey League history is just around the corner as the Spokane Chiefs get ready to host the Kootenay Ice for the Rockstar Outdoor Hockey Classic at Avista Stadium in Spokane, WA, on Saturday, January 15th.Preparations are underway at Avista Stadium, the home of the Spokane Indians baseball Club, for Saturday’s contest, and players from the Chiefs and Ice are beginning to get excited to take part in what will be an historic event for the WHL and the two Clubs.“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Chiefs’ veteran captain Tyler Johnson.

“Watching (the rink) get built at the stadium, you get the jitters thinking about getting out there on Saturday.“Our whole team is pretty excited,” he said.Staging the first-ever outdoor WHL game is an historic moment for the Spokane Chiefs and the Spokane community. Chiefs’ general manager Tim Speltz says the buzz in the Spokane community is growing as work continues in preparation for Saturday’s game.“It’s been a really exciting process, and it’s been everything we’ve hoped for,” said Speltz, who has put together two Memorial Cup Championship teams in his time in Spokane. “We’ve had great support and interest from the community, and we’ve had great support from the media.“This event means a lot to the Spokane Chiefs hockey club, and it’s going to be really great for our fans and everyone in the Spokane community,” he said.Adding to the excitement is the fact that Saturday’s contest features two of the WHL’s top teams in Spokane and Kootenay.

The Chiefs are the highest scoring team in the WHL, and currently find themselves among the top teams in the Western Conference, while the perennially-strong Ice find themselves among the Eastern Conference’s elite. Saturday’s meeting will be the second of back-to-back encounters between the teams after they meet up in Cranbrook, B.C., on Friday night.“All the boys are pretty excited to play in the first outdoor game in the WHL,” said veteran Kootenay defenseman Brayden McNabb. “Spokane has a really good team this season, and we are looking forward to seeing how we stack up against them.

“At this point in the season, points matter a lot in the standings, and there are two points available from this game, too,” he added.Playing the game in the open-aired Avista Stadium, both teams know they should be prepared for anything Mother Nature can throw at them. One only has to look at the history of outdoor games in the NHL to see the role that weather plays in the whole experience. From bitter cold to heavy snow to rain, as was seen at this year’s Winter Classic in Pittsburgh, the players all know they have to be ready to deal with conditions they would never face in an arena.

“We’ve heard a lot of different forecasts for what the weather is going to be like,” said Johnson. “I’ve heard we can expect anything from snow to thunderstorms to windy conditions to calm conditions.“Both teams will have to face the same conditions, so there won’t be any advantage or disadvantage for either team,” he said.

NOTES: Saturday’s Rockstar Outdoor Hockey Classic is the first of two outdoor WHL games on the schedule for this season…The Calgary Hitmen will host the Regina Pats on February 21st at McMahon Stadium…Saturday’s Rockstar Outdoor Hockey Classic can be seen live throughout western Canada on SHAW and live in Spokane on SWX…FSN Northwest will air the game on tape-delay at 10:00pm PST…The Chiefs are holding an Open Skate for the public at Avista Stadium on Friday prior to Saturday’s game.

Rebels Rock Warriors at Home

Score sheet: http://www.whl.ca/schedule/show/game/40294

The Warriors found themselves in tough tonight against the Red Deer Rebels. A three goal first period sunk the Warriors. A solid Darcy Kuemper between the pipes for the visiting turned away 32 shots for the shut out.

The Rebels added one more marker in the second for a 4-0 win. A bit of frustration broke out in the final minutes of play involving Warriors Dylan McIlrath and Jordan Wyton.

The Warriors are back in action Friday night against the visiting Prince Albert Raiders.

New Faces for the Warriors Tonight

The Moose Jaw Warriors have assembled their final 2010/2011 roster. As trade deadline came and passed on January 10th, the Warriors made several changes. The first stage came while the Warriors were on the BC road trip by acquiring Brett Lyon. Assistant captain Quinton Howden feels Brett has a lot to offer the tribe. “Brett brings size and toughness to the team. He’s a big guy that competes very hard and is willing to do anything to get the win,” said Howden. Director of Hockey Operations, Alan Millar is pleased with the veteran depth Lyon brings to the team. “Brett is a player that makes it harder for other teams to play against us,” commented Millar. “He is a hard nosed, gritty player with playoff experience; having played in 16 playoff games with Vancouver last season,” he added.

The Warriors moved import forward Michal Hlinka to the Prince Albert Raiders for Sebastian Svendsen. (Photo on left) Svendsen comes all the way from Denmark and had 34 points in 44 games for the Raiders. “Svendsen brings speed and work ethic with him to Moose Jaw; he’s got skill and will fill a good offensive roll,” remarked Quinton Howden on the newest addition. “Sebastian was a player we were targeting on trade deadline to add to our top six forwards,” said Alan Millar. Millar likes Svendsen competitiveness and skill.

Over the course of the break, the Warriors called up defensemen Matt Franczyk. Matt is 6’2” and comes from Winnipeg, MB. Matt had been playing with the Winnipeg Wild Midget AAA team, and had 25 points. Assistant captain and two year Warrior defensemen Kendall McFaull believes Matt adds depth to the Warriors backend. “He is going to make us stronger and help push us to become better as a defensive core,” said McFaull. “He’s a hard worker that learns quickly and is a great addition to the team,” he added. “Matt’s a solid, stay at home defensemen who keeps things simple and does the little things well,” remarked Millar.

The Warriors chose to release Mackenzie Royer to the Camrose Kodiaks, Royer will have a shot to play for the Royal Bank Cup, the National Junior A Championship as the Camrose Kodiaks are this year's hosts. Royer was acquired in a trade deal with Calgary that also brought forward Cody Beach to Moose Jaw.

Trade day had two major trades in former Swift Current Bronco’s star, Cody Eakin heading to Kootenay and Brayden Schenn becoming a Saskatoon Blade. Both teams acquiring the two superstars gave up many future picks and drafted players. Kootenay and Saskatoon currently sit in the top spots of the Eastern Conference. The Warriors head into the final three months of the regular season with optimism. The team finished off the road trip with a solid 5-2 effort and are catching both the Medicine Hat Tigers and Red Deer Rebels in the Eastern Conference Standings. The team is now fully assembled and ready to roll.

RED DEER TONIGHT

v. Red Deer
Tonight is the second meeting of the season between the Warriors and Red Deer Rebels. The Rebels won their only meeting 3-0 back on January 9th at the Civic Centre. The Warriors were 1-2-0-1 against the Rebels last year and has posted a 5-6-0-2 record against Red Deer in the last five years. Moose Jaw is 1-5 in Red Deer in that time and 4-1-0-2 at home.
Thomas Heemskerk is 0-1 against the Rebels with a 2.08gaa and a .929sv%. Byron Froese led the Rebels with two assists against the Warriors; Colin Archer, Adam Kambeitz, and Daulton Siwak have one goal each against the Warriors; Brett Ferguson has one assist; Darcy Kuemper is 1-0 with a 0.00gaa and 1.00sv%.

It's Finally Here. Canada vs Russia. Gold Medal Final.

No two teams have played for the gold medal as often as tonight’s adversaries. No other world team has a history of such success as the Canadian’s and Russian’s and most importantly no other team is more ffected by an opponent as these two power houses countries.

Coming into the tournament, it may have looked like the major opponent would be the American’s who snapped up the gold medal on Canadian soil in a gold medal show down.

The Canadian’s knew they would face off with the Russians in the preliminary rounds and notched a 6-3 win on Boxing Day. The Russians were able to snap Sweden’s hopes of playing for the ultimate prize in a controversial shoot out win in the semi finals. Team Canada put forth a dominating performance in a rematch of the 2010 gold medal game. A 4-1 victory, including a Quinton Howden marker sealed Canada’s place in the final.

The history between the Russians and Canadians is a long and colourful one. Going back all the way to 1997 when the teams first faced off. Canada would not find the gold medal until 1982 and would repeat in 1982. 1987 was the infamous brawl in Piestany where both the Soviets at the time and Canadians were disqualified. Former Warrior Theo Fleury vowed revenge in the form of a gold the following year. Theo was named captain and made his promise come true by scoring the opening goal and beating the Soviets 3-2 on New Year’s Day and taking home the coveted prize.

The year after the Soviets would dominate in Alaska and take the final game in a score of 7-2. In 1994 Canada won again by a score of 3-2 in Saskatoon. The Russian’s were back on the top of the podium in 1998, 2002 and 2003. In 2005 the tides changed with a the help of Canadian sensation Sidney Crosby. In Grand Fork, ND Crosby and team Canada beat the Russian’s 6-1.

From 2002 to 2007 (six times), Canada and Russia have met for gold. Canada has won the majority with three. What will happen tonight? Who will be the player of the game?

As obvious as it may seem, here’s who to watch for tonight:

Team Canada
Quinton Howden- How can you not! The Warrior standout has been strong throughout the tournament; scoring a big goal in the USA game, Quinton will be wearing the reverse of his usual 21, #12. Quinton has 2 goals, 3 assists and a +8 rating.

Ryan Ellis- The captain and the defensive dynamite for Canada, Ellis has WJ experience and will no doubt be looked upon tonight. Ellis has 9 points.

Ryan Johansen- Perhaps you recall when Portland was in town seeing Johansen play? He has 9 points in the tournament.

Brayden Schenn- Playing alongside Quinton Howden for many shifts over the tournament, Schenn has a team high 16 points and a +11 rating.

Mark Visentin- Visentin, a Coyotes draft pick, was phenomenal in the USA game. The Coyotes are speculating he will get the start tonight.

Russia
# 25-Yevgeni Kuznetsov- A draft pick of the Washington Capitals, Yevgeni has 8 points in the tourney.

#10- Vladimir Tarasenko- A St. Louis pick, Tarasenko has 9 points.

#9- Dmitri Orlov- Defensive leader in scoring, 9 points.

#13- Maxim Kitsyn- Eight points has Kitsyn sitting in the teams top scoring ranks.

#20- Dmitri Shikin- Playing in 5 games for Russian, Shikin has played in 5 games, winning 3. He has 13 goals against him.

As a last note on tonight’s game, no matter what the outcome of tonight’s game there is no denying all of Moose Jaw and Canada are very proud of our own Quinton Howden. Every person that comes into our office loves to talk about their excitement and how well he is playing.

It couldn’t happen to a better young man. Quinton has wanted this is whole life and along side his family, he will have chance to fullfill his dreams tonight in Buffalo. All the long practices, endless workouts, camps, games have lead him tonight. From all of Moose Jaw… Go Team Canada and good luck Quinton!

Warriors 16 year old defensemen Morgan Rielly will be rerturning to Moose Jaw with a bronze medal from the U-17's. Rielly and team Pacific skated to a 5-4 victory over Quebec. Rielly finished the tournament with 2 goals, 3 assists for 5 pts; putting him second on team Pacific amoung defensemen scoring- second only to Red Deer Rebel prospect Matt Dumba.

Here is the full game story:

WINNIPEG, Man. – Pacific is back on the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge podium after a one-year absence, claiming the bronze medal with a 5-4 victory over Quebec on Tuesday afternoon at the MTS Centre.
Brandon Magee was the overtime hero, scoring 1:34 into the extra period to cap off a wild final 21-and-a-half minutes. Felix Girard’s goal at the 1:54 mark of the third period gave Quebec a 3-1 lead, but goals 3:12 apart from Robert Trzonkowski and Mike Winther allowed Pacific to pull even.

Dominic Poulin restored the Quebec lead with a power play marker at 12:54, but tournament all-star Hunter Shinkaruk brought Pacific even again with 3:29 to go, stepping out from behind the net and roofing a shot over the shoulder of Quebec goaltender François Tremblay.
The comeback was nothing new for Pacific, which fought back from a 5-1 late-second-period deficit to force overtime in their semifinal against the United States on Monday, only to fall short in the extra frame.

Magee made sure they would be the ones celebrating on Tuesday, tipping a Joshua Smith pass past Tremblay for the game winner.

Poulin finished with a pair of goals for Quebec, which failed in its attempt to win a medal for the first time since it won gold in 2006 in Regina, Sask. For Pacific, the medal is its eighth in the last tournament, which includes five silvers and three bronze.
