Road Trip Game 2: Giants

Tonight is the only meeting of the season between the Warriors and Vancouver Giants. The Warriors beat Vancouver 2-0 in their only meeting last season. The Warriors are 2-1-1 in the last five years against the Giants, posting a 2-0 record at home and 0-1-1 record on the road. Vancouver beat the Warriors four games to none in the 2006 WHL Championship series.

Vancouver sits in 8th place in the Western Conference with a 16-16-1-4 record. The Giants made a major trade last week, sending Captian and franchise leader Craig Cunningham to Portland in exchange for Spencer Bennett and Teal Burns along with a first round pick in 2011.

James Henry is now the Giant's captain.

Warriors are lead into tonights match up by Dylan Hood with 43 points. Captain Spencer Edwards has 34 points.

Warriors Kick off Roadie with a 6-1 Victory

The Moose Jaw Warriors were in Calgary tonight for the first game of their road trip. Twenty year old Dylan Hood had quite a night, adding three goals to his stats. Hood started things off with the first goal of the game at 9:41. Captain Spencer Edwards snapped in another on the man advantage for a 2 goal lead.

Second period, off the hop at 1:16 former Hitmen, Cody Beach nailed another one past Michael Snider. Justin Kirsch would get just a single goal past Warriors goalie, Thomas Heemskerk. 3-1 to end the second.

Final twenty added another three tribe markers. Joey Kornelsen beat Snider followed by an empty netter for Dylan Hood. Hood would find his hat trick before the final buzzer on the power play for a 6-1 final score. Former Warriors Brandon Glover made a brief appearance, being sent in with 9:16 left in the game.

Dylan McIlrath had 2 assists on the night; Spencer Edwards goes home with 3 points. Warriors were 9 for 9 on the PK and 2 for 6 on the PP.

Warriors next stop is Vancouver on the 30th followed by a New Years eve battle with the Bruins.

Busy Tuesday

So much hockey on today!

First, the Warriors have begun their BC road trip by making their first stop in Calgary. As you will recall, the Hitmen and Warriors have a little bit of history this season.... after a tough first round series in last years playoffs and a 5 player trade this season will make tonights game interesting. The Warriors will continue on to Vancouver after that.

Quinton Howden and Team Canada will face Warriors Tony Honejsek and team Czech Republic this afternoon after a 6-3 win against the Russians on Boxing Day.

Warriors Morgan Rielly and Brayden Cuthbert are in Manitoba for the World Under 17 Championships today for pre-competition games before competition gets under way. January 4th is the gold medal game.

Salvation Army Adopt a Family

The Warriors finished up all the shopping and groceries for their "adopted family" this Christmas. The Warriors are happy to be part of the program and extend a big thank you to everyone in Moose Jaw who has taken part in the program and helped make someone in Moose Jaw's Christmas a great one!

Honejsek to Make World Junior Debut Tonight

Warriors own Tony Honejsek will take on team USA tonight in Rochester, NY to kick off Team Czech Republic's pre-tournament schedule. Wednesday night the Czech's will take on Germany in Rochester.

Good luck to Tony!

Howden and Team Canada Take First Game 8-0

Last night in Team Canada's 8-0 victory over Switzerland, 8 different players had a goal. Quinton Howden set up Louis Leblanc for a beautiful goal on the rush.

In net for team Canada was Mark Visentin from the OHL. Mark looked calm and in control all evening. With 18 new players joining team Canada, the worry of there not being enough scoring power or "stars" is a topics being discussed. Team Canada seemed to be relentless in their attack last night. Hard along the boards and using their size allowed for 8 goals.

The team will take on Sweden tonight in Toronto at the ACC. The game is televised on TSN at 7:30 ET.

Update from yesterday on the luggage situation... looks like team Norway still has not recieved their equipment. The game between Norway and Slovakia has been postponed according to Bob Mackenzie.

Warriors Fall to Wheaties

It may not have been the game the Warriors had hoped to have as their last home game before Christmas break, but it seemed tonight would just not be the tribe’s night. Rookie goaltender Brandon Stone spent the night between the pipes.

Brandon scored 6 goals—with three coming from star forward Scott Glennie. The Wheaties held Moose Jaw to just 8 shots in the first two periods. The Warriors only goal of the night came from Import forward, Michal Hlinka. Hlinka’s goal also brought down the stuffed toys for the annual teddy bear toss night.

Brandon Stone faced 29 shots in the loss. The Warriors went 1/5 on the power play and were 3/3 on the penalty kill. The Warriors split the home and home series with Brandon, having one last night in a shoot out 4-3.

Teddy Bear Toss a Tradition in the WHL

The Warriors annual teddy bear toss is on Saturday December 18th when the Warriors take on the Brandon Wheat Kings at the Crushed Can. Teddy Bear toss is a popular Christmas season promotion in the WHL and with many junior hockey teams.

Fans bring a new stuffed toy to the game. When the Warriors score their first goal of the night, the bears are thrown onto the ice. For those of you who have not seen a teddy bear toss, the sight is quite incredible. Bears rain down and cover the ice. Vehicles emerge on to the ice while the players, staff and helpers pile the toys into vehicles.

You may be asking yourself, “What if the Warriors don’t score,”? There have been a few instances, like the other night in Swift Current where a home team is shut out. In that case, the bears are thrown out after the final buzzer of the game.

All the bears are then loaded up by our local Salvation Army, laid out to dry, and then given to families who may need a little help this holiday season. The tradition is perhaps the most popular in Calgary, Spokane and Portland. Over 7000 fans in Portland broke the teddy bear toss record in 06/07 by throwing 14,361 toys. The Hitmen broke that record only a few weeks later by getting 15,540 bears by the 16,000 fans in attendance. In 2007, Portland once again reclaimed the title when 26,919 bears came down.

It is an excellent promotion and Moose Jaw Warriors fans are always very generous on Teddy Bear toss night. If you are thinking about attending a game before the holiday break, be sure to come out on December 18th with your bear in hand and cheer on the Warriors in their last home game until January 12th.

Pizza Party at John Chisholm School

The Warriors visited John Chisholm Aternative School this afternoon for a Pizza Party. The Warriors have been spending time at the school since September thanks to sponsor Conexus, doing discussions on various applicable topics.

A big thank you to Pizza Hut for serving up the pizza lunch. Dylan McIlrath, Spencer Edwards and Jesse Paradis send out Christmas greetings to all the students and teachers they have met while at John Chisholm.

Home and Home with Brandon Begins Tomorrow

The Warriors will head to Brandon Friday night to Westman Place to play one of their last two games before the Christmas break. The Warriors head into Friday with a 19-12-0-2 record; Brandon has a 12-19-1-3 record. The Warriors will return home SATURDAY for their final home game.

Standings
Warriors- 5th in Eastern Conference

What you Need to Know
The last time these two teams met, the Wheaties were without star forward and LA Kings draft pick, Brayden Schenn. Well, the Wheaties will still be without Schenn. He was released back to Brandon on December 2nd from the Kings, however he left only days later to join team Canada's World Junior Camp in Toronto. Many speculate Brayden will be named Captain of the team.

The Warriors will not have Quinton Howden or Antonin Honejsek in the line up this weekend as both forwards are with their countries respective World Junior teams.

Who to Watch For
Brandon
Mark Stone- among the top in WHL scoring, Mark Stone has 18 goals and 25 assists

Scott Glennie- a late addition to WJ camp, Glennie did not find himself on that roster and has 36 points for the Wheaties

Shayne Wiebe- Captain for Brandon, Wiebe has 26 points.

Moose Jaw
Dylan McIlrath
- Dylan had a great game vs Saskatoon. Throwing the body around, making some key blocks and scoring the first Warriors goal of the night--- the truck will make himself known early on in this game.

Spencer Edwards- Edwards played very well on Tuesday night. A goal and speed that lights up the crushed can… watch for Edwards to lead the way.

Morgan Rielly- You can’t miss him out there, a danger on the PP and the Warriors leading Rookie, Rielly’s skill is growing with each game.

Off the Ice Saturday Night....
It’s everyone’s favourite night! Teddy Bear Toss! Bring a new stuffed toy to throw on the ice when the Warriors score their first goal of the night.

Zeller’s is our game night sponsor… watch for a great exit give away!
The Miller Express will be setting up a great raffle table and we have a special guest… or group to sing the National Anthem.

You know where you can listen.... Country 100... with the one and only James Gallo! I do believe this one is a 7:30 start in Brandon. Back in the Jaw Saturday, the usual 7:00 start.

Shots were kept to just 24 for Saskatoon and 21 for the tribe. The Warriors went 1/3 on the power play and 3/3 on the penalty kill. DYNAMITE FIRST PERIOD GIVE WARRIORS THE 6-4 WIN OVER THE ICE

A strong first period launched the Moose Jaw Warriors over the visiting Kootenay Ice tonight at the Crushed Can. Four Warriors goals from Howden (a pair), Edwards and Bowman gave the Warriors a 4-1 advantage in the first twenty.

Second period was ridden with penalties, 11 to be exact. Tony Honejsek would score another for the tribe and Elgin Pearce would make it a 5-2 game to end the second. Final period, more penalties and a good push from Kootenay. The Ice kept the Warriors to only 3 shots in the third and managed another two goals. Warriors own twenty year old forward Dylan Hood would score goal number six. Final score 6-4 Moose Jaw.

Dylan Hood had 4 points in tonight’s game. Thomas Heemskerk faced 35 shots and the tribe took 17 of their 28 shots in the first period. Warriors take another home win and will have a weekend break before facing Saskatoon on Tuesday at home.
Molson Three Stars of the First half of season:
1. Howden
2. Heemskerk
3. Hood
Just a little story for you.... tonight Dylan Hood happened to be bounding around the hallway, grinning ear to ear prior to warm up. Asked him why he was so happy, his reply... "I think tonight's going to be a good one.... I'm feeling it," Sure enough... he was. Four points and some great chemistry from Hood's line, I'd say he was feeling it alright.
Tonights Three Stars:
1. Hood
2. Howden

Prospect: Carter Hansen

Carter Hansen, from Craven, SK was the Warrior's first round, 10th overall draft pick back in the spring. Carter is part of the 2nd place Moose Jaw General's squad. The Generals are 16-3-3 on the season, sitting just a few points back of the Prince Albert Mintos.

Carter has 10 points in 22 games. Carter may only be 15, but his 6'1" frame would keep people guessing. Carter joined the Warriors for a game in November and earned Hardest Working credentials.

The Generals take on the Blazers and Contacts this weekend and return to the Civic Center next Saturday for a 1:30 pm game prior to the Warriors game that evening.
Come out and watch this future Warrior in action along side other drafted and future WHLer's: Cory Millette (Draft pick of Red Deer Rebels), Zach Dougas (Seattle), Tyler King (Spokane), TJ Reeve (Regina), Sean Whelan (Regina), Aston Sautner (Edmonton), Zach Walker (Seattle), Austin Daae (Saskatoon) and Dayton Picard (Saskatoon).

HOWDEN HAS HIGH HOPES OF WEARING THE MAPLE LEAF FOR THE HOLIDAYS

On Monday November 30th, one young man received a phone call every hockey player dreams of; a call from Hockey Canada asking Moose Jaw Warrior Quinton Howden to attend this year’s World Junior camp. Each year around this time, Hockey Canada selects the best of the best Canadian hockey players to battle it out for a roster spot on Canada’s World Junior team. Quinton Howden, draft pick of the Florida Panther’s was lucky enough to be selected.

“I was really excited when I received the call,” commented World Junior hopeful, Quinton Howden. “This has been something that I have dreamt of for a long time and it means I am one step closer to the team I want to make,” he added. Still with a big feat ahead of him, Howden will have to compete amongst Canada’s best players under 20 years old to find a roster spot. “I am really looking forward to camp, my mindset will be just to go in and play my game,” he said. “I am going to work hard and compete as hard as I can to earn myself a spot on the roster,” said Howden.

Howden will be joining players like Swift Current’s Cody Eakin, Regina’s Carter Ashton and many of the WHL, OHL and QMJHL elite players. 17 WHL players are invited to training camp where only a select few will make the final roster that will consist of player’s from the entire CHL.

Last year the tournament was held here in Saskatchewan and you may recall a heart breaking loss to Team USA, who stopped in Moose Jaw to play an exhibition game. Canada will be on their turf in Buffalo, NY for this winter’s annual tournament.

World Junior camp will start on December 11th. The Exhibition game schedule begins on December 20th. Team Canada will play four exhibition games in Ontario (Oshawa, Toronto, Kitchener and St. Catharine’s). All the magic starts on Boxing Day (December 26th) when team Canada will face off against the Russians. The reigning champion USA team will be in pool A and team Canada will be in pool B. Canada will face off with the Czech Republic on Tuesday December 28th, Norway on the 29th and finally Sweden on New Year’s Eve.

Eleven Warriors have represented Canada in this prestigious display of talent and hockey’s elite junior players. Theoren Fleury played for the red and white in 1987 and 1988. Team Canada was disqualified in his first appearance, but took home gold the following year. Mike Keane joined Fleury in 1987 as the two representatives for the tribe. Another Warrior would not break the roster until 1994. Chris Armstrong helped Canada to take home the gold in ‘94. Ryan Smyth followed in Chris’s footsteps; winning the top prize in 1995.

Curtis Brown would be the only Warrior in 1996 on Canada’s team. A few years later, in 2000 Jamie Lundmark was part of the bronze medal team. In 2002, both Nathan Paetch and Brian Sutherby took home the silver. Nathan returned to the team in 2003 for a second silver medal. Dustin Boyd put on the maple leaf in 2006. Riley Holzapfel was a member of the team in 2008. Travis Hamonic represented the Warriors in 2009, where team Canada skated to a 2nd place finish.

Alumni Watch: Deryk Engelland

You may remember Deryk as a Moose Jaw Warrior back in the earlier 2000's. You may recall him for his big time PIM's ....520 to be exact.

In his over age season, Deryk wracked up 199 PIM's in just a single season. He spent his entire WHL career in the Jaw.

Deryk's played 26 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins this season. Originally drafted in th 6th round by New Jersey, Deryk signed with Pittsburgh in 2007 as a free agent. Since then, things have been going well and he has found himself with 5 points for the Pen's this season.

Last night, Deryk dropped the mitts with Toronto Maple Leaf, Colton Orr... and it was not their first battle.

Here's there fight back in October.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wc1szOLDTgM
.... and here is last night's rematch.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJg7gEN0Kv8

I guess Deryk hasn't lost any of the "warrior" in him.

Kootenay is coming off of a 5-0 stomping of the Raiders. Dec 4th they fell to the Tigers in OT. They took Seattle, Everett and Portland prior to journeying into Saskatchewan.

Nathan Lieuwen- ranked in the top three goalies in the WHL, Nathan has 14 wins and a 0.908 save percentage.

Tigers Take it in SO

The Warriors tangled with the Tigers last night in the Medicine Hat Arena. Only 8:00 minutes into the game, Warriors Cody Beach and Kale Kessy went at it. A minute later on a power play, the Tigers tipped one past Thomas Heemskerk from Thomas Carr. Tony Honejsek scored the first of the evening for the tribe, making the score 1-1 to end the first.

No goals in the second period to report. Dylan Bredo started off the third period with a goal at 2:48. Only two minutes later, Tony Honejsek danced his way around the defence and past Tyler Bunz. Quinton Howden would give the Warriors the go ahead goal at 11:22. With three to go, the Tigers put one past Heemskerk to tie the game at 3 a piece.

Over time would result in no goals, sending the game into a shoot out. Linden Vey was up first… and the leagues top scorer made no mistake. Up next, Honejsek for the tribe, he would not score. Rookie Hunter Shinkaruk took the next run at Heemskerk and would be denied. Cody Beach would also be turned away by Tyler Bunz. Wacey Hamilton banked the game winner and stole the extra point from the tribe.

HEEMSKERK POSTS SHUTOUT AGAINST FORMER TEAM
The Warriors stretched their winning streak to four in a row Saturday night in the Crushed Can with the help of goalie Thomas Heemskerk in his shut out performance against his former team. Quinton Howden scored the first goal of the evening on the power play, half way through the second period. Antonin Honejsek would find the back of Luke Siemens net only minutes later. Matt Grant would score his second career goal with in seconds on the power play. One final goal from Quinton Howden from Cody Beach and Mackenzie Royer in the third would make it a 4-0 score and another Warrior win at home. GOALS GALORE IN REGINA
The Moose Jaw Warriors scored… and scored…. and scored Friday night in Regina. Captain Edwards fired the Warriors first, on a short handed break away. Antonin Honejsek scored the second of the night half way through the first. Carter Ashton got the Pats on the board and allowed for teddy bears to rain on to the ice. First period score: 2-1. Second period, Edwards banked his second of the night followed by a Jordan Wyton Marker to make it 4-1. At 15:20, former Warrior Thomas Frazee snuck one past Heemskerk on the power play. 4-2 Moose Jaw. In a series of events, a broken stick managed to get tangled into the play, allowing for a Jordan Weal penalty shot. He made no mistake; 4-3 Moose Jaw. Nearly as soon as the face off puck was dropped, Tony Honejsek skated into the Pats zone and with a nice move, gave the Warriors another two goal lead. 5-3 Moose Jaw to end the second. Final period, Dylan Hood scored not even a minute into the final twenty minutes. Trent Ouellette brought the Pats within two at 7:39. 6-4 Moose Jaw…. Spencer Edwards added his third of the night; making it his first hat trick of the season and a 7-4 Moose Jaw lead. Thomas Frazee added another at 14:10; followed by Tony Honejsek getting his own hat trick. 8-5 Moose Jaw. One last Pat’s goal from Garrett Mitchell at 17:54 would not be enough. How bout that 4-0 Win?

Yes, its a little late... but sometimes the "blogger" gets sick too.
The Warriors took home a 4-0 win over the Everett Silvertips last night... making it a 4-0 record for the Warriors in their last four games.

Thomas Heemskerk took home player of the month honors to start the night and made 25 saves for a shut out and first star against his former team... what a night for Thomas!

The Warriors fired 39 shots... the tribe held the visiting team to just 7 shots in each the second and third.... over 20 penalties were handed out....

And to make the night complete, the tribe debuted their new third jerseys.

Warriors sit in 5th in the conference, just three points back of the Tigers who they face Wednesday.  The Warriors will practice tomorrow before taking to the road to visit Lethbridge and Medicine Hat and returning home Friday to face off with Kootenay (who sit in third place). The Warriors have some important games on tap before the Christmas Break.
