Game Summary: Pats at Warriors

It took an extra frame, but the Moose Jaw Warriors won the final meeting of the season with the Regina Pats 3-2 on Saturday night.

The night started off with some magic as the 15 Wing Snowbirds were the Warriors special guests creating a magical atmosphere before the game even got started. And the night ended with a little OT magic which was conducted by Justin Kirsch. The Warriors used some stick wizardry to get the game to the extra frame. Cody Beach directed a Dallas Ehrhardt shot to tie the game with just less than six minutes remaining in the third period.

The Warriors started the game by opening the scoring just two minutes and forty seconds into the second period. The Pats would score two in the second period and a hold a one goal lead after 40 minutes.

Beach would deflect a point shot from Dallas Ehrhardt for his 14th on the year and send the game to the extra frame. And halfway thru the overtime period Justin Kirsch would score his 20th on the season and send his team to victory.

The win see the teams finish with identical records of 4-2-2 in this season series. Of the eight games, four were decided in an extra period. The victory sees the Warriors three game losing streak come to an end.

Cody Beach and Kenton Miller finished the night with two points each. Miller continues to rack up the points. In the two games against Regina this weekend Miller had three goals and two assists.

Luke Siemens made 18 saves on 20 shots. The Warriors fired 41 shots at the Pats net. The PP was 0/3 and the PK was 3/4.

The Warriors will have three days to prepare for their final three games of the season. On Wednesday, the club will travel to Brandon. Then head north up to face the Raiders in Prince Albert on Friday and finish the regular season at home in the second half of a back-to-back with the Raiders.

WARRIORS TAKE FIRST OF TWO AGAINST LETHBRIDGE

With a 6-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes Saturday night at Mosaic Place, the Warriors have collected a road win and three home victories during the current streak. Tonight's home win was their 28th win of the 2011-12 regular season. The first period offensive outburst paced the Warriors to their 41st win on the season and helped them move that much closer to clinching the East Division.

The first period scoring charge was started by rookie winger Eric Arnold who scored his 12th of the season two minutes into the game, Torrin White and Shayne Gwinner with the helpers. Quinton Howden became the third Warrior to score 30 plus goals this season when he scored just past the halfway point of the first. Joel Edmundson scored his first of two on the night to make the lead three. A less than a minute later, February's player of the month, Kenton Miller scored on the powerplay to give the Warriors a four goal lead. With an assist on the man advantage goal, Justin Kirsch registered his 100th career WHL point.

The powerplay would click again just a minute and a half into the middle frame when Kirsch scored his 19th of the season. The Chiliwack, B.C., native would register his third point of the night, with his second assist and the Warriors sixth goal when Edmundson scored his second of the game and the third of the season. The Hurricanes would get on the board with less than a minute left in the period with a man advantage goal by Jaimen Yakubowski. Adam Henry would score another powerplay goal late in third to round out the scoring.

The Warriors win continues to put pressure on the other East Division teams trailing the division leaders as they move closer to clinching top spot. With 41 and counting the Warriors have bested last season's win total of 40 and points of 86. With the win tonight and the Saskatoon loss Saturday night in Red Deer, the Warriors have at least clinched a tie for top spot in the East Division.

The Warriors will look to add to their total on Tuesday when they travel to Lethbridge to finish off the home-and-home set with the Hurricanes. The club then heads north up the QE II to take on the conference leading Edmonton Oil Kings. The game time for both is set for 8 p.m. local.

Game Preview: Lethbridge Hurricanes at Moose Jaw Warriors

The first of the three final home games of the 2011-12 regular season sees the Lethbridge Hurricanes come into the Warriors' house. The Warriors and Hurricanes will hook up tonight and then again on Tuesday in Lethbridge to conclude the four-game season series. The Warriors have won the first two of this head-to-head series with a home and road win.

The Warriors (40-17-5-2--87) see the Lethbridge Hurricanes (26-38-0-1--53) roll into town tonight. With a three game winning streak, the Warriors will face the Hurricanes twice in the next four days in a home-and-home set. The Warriors have won both match-ups so far this season. An early October season face-off here in Moose Jaw resulted in the home side winning a mid-week game 3-2. At the beginning of a three-game Alberta road swing, the Warriors would pick up a 5-3 road win and go 3-0 on that road trip. Quinton Howden has tallied the most points for the Warriors with four (3G, 1A) in a single game against Lethbridge. With two games in the next four days against the Hurricanes, the Warriors will look continue this season's successful trend. Last season, the Warriors won three of the four meetings between the two clubs and hold an 11-6-1-1 record over the past five years.

The Warriors are 7-2-1 their last ten, collecting 15 of a possible 20 points. The Warriors have scored 228 goals this season and allowed 195. Moose Jaw Warriors have the 2nd most wins (27) on home ice in the WHL and a road record of 13-14-3-1. When leading after the first the Warriors are 21-1-2. That unblemished record was broken by the Hitmen Friday, Jan.13th. And when leading after forty minutes, they hold a record of 27-1-4. The one loss held by the Warriors when leading after 40 minutes was tarnished by the Pats on Dec. 9th, 2011. When the Warriors outshoot their opponent they have a 29-9-3-2 record. The Warriors have a 19-4-5-2 record in one goal games. In 18 games on Saturday night, the Warriors are 13-4-1 and have scored 68 GF and 51 GA.

The Warriors have the seventh ranked power play (24.0%) scoring 69 goals with the man advantage. The club has the ninth best penalty kill (79.9%) in the league. The Moose Jaw Warriors have played in 13 overtime games, (tied) third most in the WHL, with Red Deer, Spokane and Kootenay. They have collected 19 points from games in extra time. The Warriors have 10 players with 10 or more goals this season and three players with 20+ goals and two players have hit the 30+ mark this campaign. The Warriors come in on a three-game winning streak.

Their 40th win of the season came against the Prince Albert Raiders last night at the Art Hauser Centre. A 4-3 come-from-behind win was lead by James Henry, three points and Cam Braes, two goals. The final game in February saw the Warriors pick up another home win. A 5-1 victory over the Red Deer Rebels, gives the club their 27th win on home ice. Sam Fioretti had two goals (18th, 19th) for the club in the victory. In the start of back-to-back home games, the Moose Jaw Warriors won 5-2 over the Swift Current Broncos. Kenton Miller continued his torrent goal scoring pace with two more to reach the 30-goal plateau. It was an 8-2 loss on Friday night to the Regina Pats at the Brandt Centre. Cam Braes and Kendall McFaull scored for the Warriors. Luke Siemens and Spencer Tremblay played and each surrendered four goals.

With a single point, Justin Kirsch will achieve the 100 point mark in his WHL career. With the win last night, Warriors head coach Mike Stothers becomes only the fourth coach in club history to win 40 games in a season. Stothers is only the second coach in club history (since 1984-85) to win 40+ games in his rookie season, Steve Young, 44 wins in his first season behind the bench.

The Moose Jaw Warriors got a road win tonight to start the month of March. A 4-3 win over the Prince Albert Raiders at the Art Hauser Centre gives the Warriors their 40th win of the season.

The Warriors came from behind to earn the two points on the road and start the two-game weekend set with two points and will be looking to get another two points tomorrow night at Mosaic. The Warriors leading scorer took charge of the offensive charge on the night with two goals. Braes scored his team leading 37th in the second period on the powerplay to his team up 2-1. Braes then scored his 38th in the third period to pull his team even. Less than two minutes later, Torrin White scored his 10th goal of the season and what would be the game winning goal in the final frame.

The game was even after the opening period when James Henry answered a mid-period goal by the Raiders. Henry notched his 15th of the season to go with his two assists on the night. Henry set up the game winner by White with less than five minutes left in the game to lead the Warriors to the two points. The Warriors fell behind in the second when the Raiders scored two powerplay goals in the middle section of the middle frame.

Luke Siemens made 23 saves on 26 shots in the game. With two assists, Justin Kirsch is one point away from reaching 100 in his WHL career. Eric Arnold, Shayne Gwinner, Tanner Eberle and Sam Fioretti all registered an assist on the night.

The Warriors return home to Mosaic Place Saturday night to face the Lethbridge Hurricanes in their first of two meetings over four days. It is a home-and-home series with the Hurricanes starting tomorrow night and concluding Tuesday night at the Enmax Centre. Entering the final nine games of the 2011-12 regular season the Warriors will play two-thirds of those games on the road. That starts tonight in Prince Albert.

The Warriors (39-17-5-2--85) travel north to take on a provincial rival the Prince Albert Raiders (20-37-3-3--46). On a two game winning streak, the Warriors will start the final three weeks of the regular season on the road. It is a face-off of first and sixth in the East Division. The last time these two clubs met was on Feb. 4th where the Warriors came away with a 7-2 victory. In five games this season, the Warriors hold a 4-1 games won advantage. The Warriors have outscored the Raiders 22-12 in the five games this season. Quinton Howden has eight points in four games against the Raiders. Rookie Eric Arnold has five points in five games against Prince Albert this season. Last season, the Warriors won five of the eight meetings.
