WARRIORS HEAD TO THE HAT FOR ROUND 2

Game Preview: Warriors at Tigers

The Moose Jaw Warriors move closer to attaining that number one seed in the WHL Eastern Conference. With a 6-0 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers at Mosaic Place, the club is now just three points behind the Oil Kings. The Vancouver Giants handed Edmonton a road loss and thus reduced the margin for the Warriors. Tonight's game is the second of the two game home-and-home series between the Warriors and Tigers. An odd scheduling match-up that will be rather hostile due to last night's results. The Warriors do come in on a six game winning streak and also won three games in a row on the road last week.

The Warriors (37-15-5-1--80 points) travel to Medicine Hat (35-20-2-2--74 points) tonight. The two teams have met three times this 2011-12 regular season. This will be the final meeting of the season between these two clubs. Last night, the Warriors shutout the Tigers 6-0 and took a 2-1 season series. Luke Siemens made 22 saves for his fourth shutout of the season. The home team has earned all the victories thus far between these two clubs. The Tigers won 6-3 in Medicine Hat in mid-January. The Warriors got a 3-2 victory on Nov. 19, 2011. Last season, the Warriors were 0-2-0-2 against the Tigers which has been improved this earning a split thus far.

In the first of a home-and-home series this weekend the Warriors blanked the Tigers 6-0 at Mosaic Place. The special teams were the story of the game. The Warriors powerplay scored five of the six goals, five in a row with the man advantage. And the PK for the home side finished 6-for-6.The Warriors won 5-2 against the Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday at Mosaic Place. Kenton Miller recorded his first hat trick in his WHL career. Quinton Howden and Cam Braes had the other Warrior goals. With the win, the lead in the East Division was increased to nine points over the Blades. In their final game of a three game road trip through the Central Division, the Warriors capped it off with their third consecutive win. In a wildly entertaining second period (for the fans), the teams tallied nine goals, Kirsch scored late in the period to give the club a 6-5 lead. The Warriors scored two in the 3rd and won 8-5.

The Warriors are 9-1 their last ten, collecting 18 of a possible 20 points. This club is on a six game undefeated streak and have won their last three roads game. The Warriors have outscored their opponent's 30-14 and are undefeated in that stretch.

Moose Jaw has the most wins (25) on home ice in the WHL and a road record of 12-12-3. When leading after the first the Warriors are 21-1-2. That unblemished record was broken by the Hitmen Friday, Jan.13th. And when leading after forty minutes, they hold a record of 25-1-4. The one loss held by the Warriors when leading after 40 minutes was tarnished by the Pats on Dec. 9th, 2011. When the Warriors outshoot their opponent they have a 26-7-3-1 record. The Warriors have an 18-4-5-1 record in one goal games.

The Warriors have the fifth ranked power play (24.7%) and the sixth best penalty kill (81.1%) in the league. The Moose Jaw Warriors have played in 12 overtime games, (tied) third most in the WHL. They have collected 18 points from games in extra time. The Warriors have nine players with 10 or more goals this season and three players with 20+ goals this campaign.

Cam Braes and Quinton Howden could be argued are the hottest Warriors on the ice right now. Braes has a four game point streaking going, tallying four goals and four assists in that stretch. Howden has been on a roll all month. The Warriors' winger has 11 goals and 16 points in seven games this month. Among those 11 markers, seven have come on the powerplay. Luke Siemens stopped 22 shots last night to earn his fourth shutout of the year. In turn, the shutout stopped Emerson Etem's 19-game point streak.

Leading Scorers: Braes (69), Henry (58), Howden (54), Kirsch (46) and Cody Beach (45)

Tigers Leading Scorers: Etem (90), Shinkaruk (73), Bettauer 45, Konan 45 and Valk (44)

The Warriors will travel west to face the Swift Current Broncos in a Monday afternoon affair. Game time is 2 p.m. from Speedy Creek.

WARRIORS TAME TIGERS

Game Story: Tigers at Warriors

The special teams were the story of Friday night's game between the Warriors and Tigers at Mosaic Place. Five of the six goals the Warriors scored in a 6-0 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers were on the powerplay. The Warriors powerplay scored the first five goals of the game and ended the night 5-for-8, while the home team's penalty killing was a perfect 6-for-6 on the night.

Quinton Howden continues to provide some offensive flare for his club this month. The Warriors left winger has only been held pointless in one game (against Calgary) this month. Howden scored his first powerplay goal just past the three minute mark of the first. The Florida Panthers first round pick scored his second powerplay goal at 13:34 of middle frame and the third goal of the game. The Howden goals tonight were his sixth and seventh on the powerplay this month. Cam Braes took a feed from James Henry then zipped a wrist shot pass Tigers' starter Kenny Cameron. Cameron got his second straight start as Tyler Bunz got another night off. Dallas Ehrhardt registered his third goal of the season and the Warriors fifth powerplay goal of the evening just before the midway point of the third. Eric Arnold finished off the scoring with the only even strength marker of the game.

Sam Fioretti had a powerplay goal, which came just as the first period was coming to an end, and also added an assist. Cam Braes had himself a three point night with a goal and two helpers. Dallas Ehrhardt had a goal and an assist. James Henry and Justin Kirsch tallied two helpers. Kenton Miller, Cody Beach, Dylan McIlrath and Travis Brown got on the scoresheet each with a single assist to round-out the scoring. Lost in all this scoring, Luke Siemens recorded his fourth shutout of the 2011-12 regular season. The Delta, B.C. native stopped all 22 shots sent his way.

The second and third periods saw the penalty box door get quite an extensive workout. In the middle frame 14 minutes of the 20 minutes of play saw one team with the man advantage. The game also had its' share of the tussles. Six fights and 12 major penalties were handed out in the third period.

GAME PREVIEW: TIGERS AT WARRIORS

Game Preview: Medicine Hat Tigers at Moose Jaw Warriors

The home stretch for the playoffs is fully underway now. These two clubs are right in the thick of that race in the WHL Eastern Conference. The Tigers and Warriors will both be looking to gain ground in the pursuit of first place in the Eastern Conference tonight. The Warriors hold the trump card by controlling the top seed in the East Division. The Warriors possess a nine point lead in the division, by defeating the Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday night, and are now chasing the Edmonton Oil Kings for top spot in the Eastern Conference. The hunt for first place in the conference continues as the margin is only five points and the Warriors hold a game in-hand on the Oil Kings. The Tigers are also looking to hunt down the number one seed trailing Edmonton by nine points. Thus, the importance of this back-to-back set between these clubs is of the utmost. The two teams also possess a couple of the WHL`s hottest players right now.

Quinton Howden has been on a tear so far this month. In six games in February, Howden has scored nine goals and added five assists to register 14 points in that stretch. Let`s also not downplay the importance that Kenton Miller has been to the Warriors. Currently, Miller holds the WHL player streak with five games and 11 points, including seven goals in that stretch. For the visiting club, Emerson Etem just achieved a feat undone in that 11 years by scoring 50 goals (51) in 50 games. Etem enjoyed an 11-game goal streak, racking up 14 goals from December 10th to January 27th. The Tigers` winger leads the WHL in goals and is fourth in the overall scoring race. The two Warriors will look to continue their stellar play and lead their team tonight.

The Warriors (36-15-5-1--78 points) face off against the Medicine Hat Tigers (35-19-2-2--74 points) at Mosaic Place tonight. The two teams have met twice this 2011-12 regular season and will renew acquaintances in back-to-back, home-and-home meetings this weekend. The Tigers come in with the second best 10 game record (7-3) to face the hottest team in the Eastern Conference, the Warriors who have won five in a row and are 8-1-1 in their last 10. The home team has earned the victories thus far in this series. The Tigers won 6-3 in Medicine Hat in mid-January. The Warriors got a 3-2 victory on Nov. 19, 2011. These are also the final two meetings of the regular season between these clubs. Last season, the Warriors were 0-2-0-2 against the Tigers which has been improved this earning a split thus far.

The Warriors are 8-1-1 their last ten, collecting 17 of a possible 20 points. In the last five games, the Warriors have outscored their opponent's 29-14 and are undefeated in that stretch. Moose Jaw is tied for the most wins (24) on home ice in the WHL with Portland and Edmonton and a road record of 12-12-3. When leading after the first the Warriors are 20-1-2. That unblemished record was broken by the Hitmen Friday, Jan.13th. And when leading after forty minutes, they hold a record of 24-1-4. The one loss held by the Warriors when leading after 40 minutes was tarnished by the Pats on Dec. 9th, 2011. When the Warriors outshoot their opponent they have a 25-7-3-1 record. The Warriors have an 18-4-5-1 record in one goal games. The Warriors have the sixth ranked power play (23.6%) and the 10th best penalty kill (80.6%) in the league. The Moose Jaw Warriors have played in 12 overtime games, (tied) third most in the WHL. They have collected 18 points from games in extra time. The Warriors have nine players with 10 or more goals this season and three players with 20+ goals this campaign.

The Warriors won 5-2 against the Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday at Mosaic Place. On Friday night at the Saddledome, the Warriors fell behind by two early, but rallied to score four unanswered to collect a 4-2 victory against the Hitmen. Kenton Miller had a three point night and Justin Kirsch added a pair of assists, as the two former Hitmen contributed in defeating their old club.

WARRIORS INCREASE LEAD ATOP EAST

Game Story: Blades at Warriors

The Moose Jaw Warriors increased their lead atop the East Division with a 5-2 win over the Saskatoon Blades tonight at Mosaic.

In a final showdown of the 2011-12 regular season, the Warriors came from behind to gain a nine point lead over the Blades in the division. But more significantly, the Warriors keep winning to push the Edmonton Oil Kings for that number one spot in the Eastern Conference.

Kenton Miller continues (to raise eyebrows outside of the organization with) his offensive output this season. The veteran forward scored his first career WHL hat trick in the game and now has 26 goals during this campaign. Miller was the lone scorer in the final period. Coming into the contest tonight, the Redvers, Saskatchewan native, had scored five game winning goals in the last five Warriors victories. Miller sealed the game by scoring the fourth and fifth Warriors' goals.

The second period was an offensive outburst for the Warriors. The home side scored four goals to take a two goal lead heading into the third. Miller ended the four goal outburst by his club with just less than three minutes remaining in the frame. Quinton Howden got it started on the powerplay with his 25th of the season. Kenton Miller scored his first of two in the period 28 seconds later to tie the game. Cam Braes gave the Warriors the lead on a nice dish by Sam Fioretti.

The Warriors fell behind the eight ball in the first period. Jesse Paradis opened the scoring. Then Lukas Sutter added to the Blades lead. After the first period of play, the visitors had a two-goal lead.

Miller was named the game's first star, Sam Fioretti was named star two, with his tenacious effort and he set the game winning goal. Darren Dietz of the Blades got the nod as the third star. Dylan McIlrath was named the Hardest Working Warrior of the game.

The Medicine Hat Tigers come to Mosaic in the first of a home-and-home set Friday night. Puck drop will be the usual 7 p.m. at Mosaic Place. Saturday is the return match with the Tigers at the Medicine Hat Arena game time is 830 p.m. CST.

WARRIORS SWEEP THREE GAME ROAD TRIP

Game Summary: Warriors at Rebels

The Warriors collected three wins and six points on this Central Division road trip. By defeating the Red Deer Rebels 8-5 on Saturday night at the Enmax Centrium, the club evened their road record (12-12-3) and also extended the winning streak to four. Justin Kirsch would score the game winner, his fourth on the season just before the end of the second period.

The second period, understatedly, was a wild one. The two teams combined for nine goals in the twenty minutes of play. It would be the Warriors who got the scoring started when Quinton Howden scored shorthanded and cut the Rebels lead to one. The Rebels would get the two goal lead back about half a minute later. The Warriors would then score three straight to take a 4-3 lead. Cam Braes on the powerplay, then James Henry got his 12th and Torrin White added his 9th to put the black and red ahead for the first time in the game. The back-and-forth scoring would continue as the two clubs would get one and give up one twice. The Rebels would tie the game and then Kendall McFaull would get the lead back with his 5th on the season. In less than a minute, the Rebels would tie the game once again. But with just 22 seconds left, Justin Kirsch scored his 18th on a nice set-up by Braes to give the Warriors the 6-5 lead after 40 minutes.

In the first period the Warriors found themselves in a two-goal deficit when the period ended. The two clubs had put 12 shots at the net. Former Warriors Deven Dubyk made 12 saves, Warriors starter Spencer Tremblay stopped 10 of 12 and a few of the 'huge' variety. The Warriors outshot the Rebels 41-31 and are 24-7-3-1 when they outshoot their opponent.

Henry, Howden, Justin Kirsch all had three point nights. Kirsch had two goals on the night; his second in the third was his ninth powerplay marker of the season. Kirsch has scored 16 goals in 33 games after being acquired by the Warriors in October. Andrew Johnson and Cam Braes were also multiple point scorers with two points in the game. Braes was named a star of the game in all three games on the road trip (two 3rd's and a 1st last night).

The Warriors have two games at home coming up this week. The first up are the Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday night. Then the Medicine Hat Tigers come to Mosaic in the first of a home-and-home set. Saturday is the return match with the Tigers at the Medicine Hat Arena game time is 830 p.m. CST

WARRIORS WIN FIRST GAME OF ALBERTA ROAD TRIP IN LETHBRIDGE

Game Summary: Warriors at Hurricanes

The Alberta road trip started in a positive way tonight.
The Warriors took an early first period lead and rode that to 5-3 victory over the Hurricanes on Wednesday night at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge.

Quinton Howden once again carried the offensive load for the Warriors. Howden recorded back-to-back four point nights which included another three goal performance. Similar to Saturday night in Moose Jaw against Prince Albert, the Warriors would build an early lead and hold on to collect the two points.

Eric Arnold got the scoring started in the first with Howden and Travis Brown getting the helpers. Howden would then score two straight both on the powerplay. One goal would come late in the first with just 12 ticks left on the clock. And then just 30 seconds into the middle frame, the Warriors would convert once again with the man advantage. Returning to his old home, Cam Braes would be credited with two assists on the second and third goals by the Warriors. Brody Sutter would answer, just before the midway point of the second, for the home team Hurricanes and in turn spoiling a shutout bid Warriors starting goalie Luke Siemens had going. Kenton Miller just seems to be coming through with timely goals as of late. With his 21st goal of the season tonight, Miller has scored four game winning goals in this latest stretch for the club. Brody Sutter and Sam Mckechnie would score for the Hurricanes to pull the Hurricanes within one. Howden would salt the game away with an empty net to give him the hat trick.

With the four point night, Howden was named the game's first star and with a pair of assists Cam Braes was named third star in a return to his former home. Kenton Miller also had a two point night with a goal and an assist. The Warriors were two for four on the powerplay and put 40 shots at the Hurricanes' net.

WARRIORS TAKE DOWN RAIDERS

Game Summary: Raiders at Warriors

Another home win and a WHL career milestone were the story at Mosaic Saturday night. The Moose Jaw Warriors continued their winning ways on home ice defeating the Prince Albert Raiders 7-2 in front of over 3,900 fans.

A league leading 23rd win on home ice keeps the Warriors atop the East Division. And as much difficulty the road seems to give the club, there are right at home at Mosaic Place in Moose Jaw.

Quinton Howden gave the home faithful plenty to get excited about. Not only with the hat trick he registered in tonight's game, but Howden achieved a career milestone. On the second goal of the night in the first period, Howden scored his 100 regular season goal in the WHL. Cody Beach, who will be the answer to future trivia question, set Howden up on the goal. The two first period goals helped the Warriors get off to a strong start in tonight's game.

The early part of the second was a bit of a different period in this story. The Raiders evened the game on a controversial (according to the crowd and the media) penalty shot by Mark McNeill. It was at that point the Warriors returned to the formidable play of the first period and scored five unanswered goals.

Kenton Miller scored the game-winning goal just prior to the halfway point of the period to seal the game. Miller has been proving to be the game closer, not only because he has five GWG's on the season, but he had scored the three previous game winners in Warriors' victories.

Cody Beach, Cam Breas and Kenton Miller recorded multiple point nights (1G,1A) alongside Howden who contributed an assist in his four point effort. Spencer Tremblay appeared in 15 games this season and made 28 saves on 30 shots. The rookie netminder collected his fifth win this campaign tonight.

The Warriors now head out on the road for a three game stint through Alberta. The trip starts in Lethbridge where Cam Braes will play in front of his old crowd prior to the 2011 WHL trade deadline. The second game is in Calgary and the excursion finishes in Red Deer on Saturday.

The Warriors next home is Wednesday, February 15th and it's Men's Night. Get a steak and a beer at Champs when you purchase a ticket. Check out the poster on Facebook and Twitter. WARRIORS TO HAULT 'RAID' OF PIRATES AT MOSAIC

Game Preview: Prince Albert Raiders at Moose Jaw Warriors

The Warriors will look to get back on the attack tonight as they host the Raiders at Mosaic. The Warriors had their seven-game undefeated streak snapped last night by the Blades. A 6-2 setback allows the Warriors to begin a new winning stretch heading into the last full month of the regular season. The Raiders come in after falling 3-2 to the Tigers in Medicine Hat.

The Warriors (31-15-5-1--68 points), take on the Prince Albert Raiders (18-31-1-2--39points). The Warriors and Raiders will hook up three more times after tonight, all next month. The Warriors hold a 3-1 over the Raiders this season. Their last meeting, the Raiders won on home ice 3-1 on December 4th, 2011. The Warriors had won the previous three meetings. Luke Siemens recorded one of his three shutouts on the season. Last season, the Warriors won the eight series by obtaining five wins. The five year record between the two clubs is 21-12-1 in favour of the Warriors.

The weekend didn't start the way the club wanted, a 6-2 loss to the Saskatoon Blades on Friday night. The Blades scored five goals to build a lead before Quinton Howden and Eric Arnold scored to cut the lead to three. Two games in four days, the Warriors topped the Broncos again. This time the score was 5-2 on Saturday night at Mosaic. A four goal second period carried the Warriors to the win. Last night the Warriors came away with a victory increasing their lead over the Saskatoon Blades to seven. A 2-1 win at Mosaic Place also increased the Warriors home win total to 21. Quinton Howden and Kenton Miller scored for the Warriors while Luke Siemens made 29 saves in the victory.

The Warriors are 6-1-1-0 their last eight, collecting 13 of a possible 16 points. Over that eight game span, the club has scored 30 goals. Moose Jaw has the most wins in the WHL on home ice with 22 and a road record of 9-12-3. In their last 10, the Warriors record is 6-3-1-0. When leading after the first the Warriors are 18-1-2. That unblemished record was broken by the Hitmen Friday, Jan.13th. And when leading after forty minutes, they hold a record of 19-1-4. The one loss held by the Warriors when leading after 40 minutes was tarnished by the Pats on Dec. 9th, 2011. When the Warriors outshoot their opponent they have a 20-7-3 record. The Warriors have an 18-4-5-1 record in one goal games. The Warriors have the 8th ranked power play (22.5%) and the eighth best penalty killing (80.5%) in the league. The Moose Jaw Warriors have played in 12 overtime games, second most in the WHL. They have collected 18 points from games in extra time. The Warriors have seven players with 10 or more goals this season.

Currently, the trade acquisitions by the Warriors at the deadline about a month ago have fit nicely into this line-up. James Henry has been a point-a-game player with 10 points in 10 games. Cam Braes has been providing exceptional productivity at the top centre position. In xx games as a Warrior, he has 12 points in 10 games (5G, 7A). Quinton Howden registered two point last night, a goal and an assist. The goal helps Howden move closer to his 100 regular season goals in the WHL career milestone.

On the other side of the red line, Mark McNeill, the Blackhawks 1st round pick, who was named the WHL player of the Week last week (Jan.23-29) is the Raiders second leading scorer (24G,33A-57), and the leading goal getter. Justin Maylan leads his club's leading point producer with 69 points in 52 games (20G,49A).
