Back and Fourth; Series Shifts to Cranbrook

It seems neither team can post 2 wins in a row in a epic battle between the 4th and 5th seeded teams. The tribe dominated games 1&3; while the Ice froze over the Warriors in games 2&4. The Moose Jaw Warriors couldn’t get anything past Nathan Lieuwen Wednesday night—unlike the performance they put on Tuesday.

Thomas Heemskerk allowed 5 goals on the night—the opposite of his shut out performances in games 1 and 3. The game got chippy in the third period on Wednesday, with Andrew Johnson, Dylan McIlrath, Joel Edmundson and Brett Lyon all being sent to the dressing room early. The series is starting to really heat up, especially with a 2-2 split on the board. Game 5 is a key game for the tribe. A win would send them home for a possible game 6 win and to clinch the series. A loss makes game 6 a critical win for the team to hold off elimination and head all the way back to Cranbrook for a game 7.

The Warriors are on their way to Cranbrook Thursday morning for game 5 on Friday night. The Warriors will return to Moose Jaw for game 6 on Sunday. Tickets are on sale for Sunday. Season ticket holders have their tickets in their 6 game packs. The tickets are labelled “Game 3” and will read TBD.
A few notes:
Kootenay's Drew Czerwonka, draft pick of the Calgary Flames missed game 4 due to an injury sustained in game 3

Warriors are still without Cody Beach and Dallas Ehrhardt Rookie d-men Matt Franczyk and Travis Brown have been rotating into the 7th 'D' spot Rookie Brandon Potomak has played in games 3 & 4 for the tribe

Jesse Paradis stood out in both games at home; notching 2 assists in game 3

Sebastian Svendsen was named the hardest working in game 4; deservingly so Andrew

Johnson was named Player of the Month for March; Andrew had 5 goals in March and already 1 in the post season all as a 16 year old rookie

Ice'd Over

The Moose Jaw Warriors couldn’t find a goal in game four. The visiting Ice managed 5 unanswered goals out of 37 shots. The Warriors went 5/5 on the penalty kill and 0/3 on the power play. The tribe had 59 minutes of penalties in the 3rd period—21 penalties were handed out between the two teams in the third alone. Matt Fraser, Steele Boomer, Joe Antilla (2) and Cody Eakin all scored for the Ice. The Warriors were held to just 3 shots in the third period. The Warriors will load up the bus tomorrow morning and begin the trek to Cranbook for game 5 on Friday. The two teams will meet for game 6 Sunday in Moose Jaw. Tickets go on sale tomorrow morning at 9:00 am.

Warriors Shut Out Ice...Again.

The Warriors found their stride Tuesday night as they were welcomed back home to a sold out arena. A thrilling first period featured a highlight reel goal from Spencer Edwards with a fantastic feed from Sebastian Svendsen.

With just 30 seconds to go in the period, Joey Kornelsen scored his first of the playoffs to give the tribe a two goal lead heading into the first break. The second period had Antonin Honejsek with the third marker of the night from Jesse Paradis and Quinton Howden. A final Dylan Hood goal in the third would shut the door on the visiting Ice.

Thomas Heemskerk posted his second shut out of the post season and turned away 22 shots. Jesse Paradis was named first star of the game for his 2 assists and great play on the night. Both teams will get some rest before returning to the ice for game 4 at the Civic Center tommorow night.

Warriors Come Home 1-1

The Ice came out with all guns blazing Saturday night; firing 42 shots at Thomas Heemskerk. With just 20 shots coming from the visiting Warriors, the tribe found themselves down 3-0 after just two periods. Quinton Howden and Spencer Edwards would bring the Warriors within just a single goal nearing the end of the third, but an empty net would allow for two more Kootenay goals and road loss for the Warriors. The tribe struggled with special teams going 0/7 on the power play and 5/7 on the penatly kill. The Warrior began the trip home last night and will be ready to host the Ice Tuesday and Wednesday.

University Cup Action

Former Warrior Kyle Fecho and the U of A Golden Bears are taking on McGill on Rogers Sportsnet. If the Bears win, the X-men will get to play in the final.... but if the Bears win by 3 a shoot out will be needed to declare a winner and Jason Bast, Joey Perricone, Brennen Wray and the X-Men will have to suit up and head out for a shoot out.

McGill scored first, ending the need for a shoot out.

Warriors Take Game One

The Warriors got exactly what they wanted last night, a game one win on the road. The Warriors shut out the home team and put away four goals in a winning effort. Andrew Johnson notched the first of the game and the first of his WHL playoff career.

Quinton Howden had a pair-- one being short handed. Jesse Paradis found the back of the net for the fourth goal of the evening. Thomas Heemskerk stopped all 25 shots that came his way.

The Warriors will head back to the Rec Plex tonight for game 2 of the series before returning home to host the Ice Tuesday and Wednesday. Game goes at 7 bells. Join James Gallo for the pre game show at 6:45.

Game 1 Goes Tonight

Game one of the 7 game series goes tonight in Cranbrook. The team arrived yesterday evening and will be looking to come back to Moose Jaw with two wins. The team plays Friday and Saturday before returning home.

The Warriors split the season series-- 2 a piece in the regular season with the Warriors winning both games before trade deadline and the Ice taking both in the New Year.

Some noteables:
Cody Beach and Jordan Wyton; usuals in the line up will not be in tonight due to injury. This is only the second time these two teams have met in playoffs. Last time the Ice took it in 4 straight back in 2001.
There will be some Moose Jaw fans in the building tonight as a number have made the trip. Cheer loud! Sounds like tickets are still available for the game tonight....
Another note, the Mayor of Cranbrook has challenged Glen Hagle to a "jersey" battle... which will see the opposing mayor having to sport the jersey of the losing team.

Listen to the game live on Country 100 at 7:00 pm and 6:45 for the pre-game show.

"C" Stands for more than Captain

From a walk on at Warriors Training Camp in 2009 to Warriors Captain and top six forward in 2010, you could say Warrior Spencer Edwards knows just how far commitment and determination can go in life. Spencer Edwards takes nothing for granted and has carried the same mind set in his community efforts.

On top of his 40 hours of volunteer work this season, Spencer was passionate enough about his role as Captain and the Moose Jaw community to propose his very own community initiative. Entitled “Captain’s Care” Spencer wanted to create a program that would be passed on from generation to generation of Captain. Spencer visited sick kids at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital throughout the 10/11 season. In true “Edwards” fashion, Spencer didn’t just stop in and sign a few autographs; he spent hours playing games or simply just talking to patients who needed some cheering up. On one occasion, a ten year old girl was only minutes away from being air lifted to Saskatoon for emergency heart surgery. She was anxiously awaiting Spencer’s arrival and in full gown, gloves and mask, Spencer assured her that the helicopter ride would not be frightful. The little girl touched his heart so deeply; he purchased a Warriors Morty doll out of his own pocket and mailed it to Saskatoon for the young girl.

During the Warriors “Get Gutsy” campaign for Crohn’s and Colitis, the players were challenged by the fans to perform gutsy challenges. Spencer committed to trying out speed skating in front of the fans. Spencer slapped on the speed skates and did his very best while helping raise $1000.00 that night—raising over $3000.00 over the three night fundraiser.

In 2009, Spencer led the way in shaving his head for cancer and this season was the first player to start sporting his moustache in support of prostate cancer. Never needing to be asked, Spencer takes it upon himself to find ways, big or small to make a difference.

Spencer took part in the first ever partnership with John Chisholm School (an alternative school for high school students who struggle from the effects of drugs, alcohol and behaviour issues). Spencer had monthly discussions with the students focusing on topics such as rules, behaviour, goals, overcoming challenges and drugs. He even stayed to play basketball and games. Spencer opened up to the students and embraced the experience. Often times the visits would not only be impactful for the students but also for Spencer. Hearing their stories and experiences was something that will stay with him for a lifetime.

Not only does Spencer always have time for a fan young or old, he has made a special connection in Moose Jaw. One young fan became particularly enthralled when Spencer skated over during a family skate to the young girl who had forgotten her skates. Spencer skated around with her in his arms for the rest of the skate. Ever since, the young fan makes sure she never misses a game and has a special wave for Spencer. Spencer often takes time after a game to visit with his young fan.

There are many ways to give back to a community. It can be monetarily, but sometimes the best way is by giving your heart. Spencer has shared his love for hockey and life in every way. In just two seasons, Spencer has been embraced by the Warriors fans and City. The “C” on his chest not only stands for Captain but for caring and compassion- words that fittingly describe the Warriors nominee for Humanitarian of the Year.

Bast CIS Rookie of the Year

The CIS University Cup gets underway today in Fredrickton. Jason Bast, Joey Perricone and Brennen Wray are heading in as the fifth seed. St. Fx will meet first with McGill. Best of luck guys! Bast already received individual honors, taking home the Rookie of the Year (seems odd to call him a rookie as in MJ it seems he was always a veteran).

Tuesday Thoughts

It's the week before the post season gets under way. The Warriors will spend the week fine tuning things before packing up the bus to make the long trip to Cranbrook.

The Warriors may have ended off the season with an 8-4 loss, but their home performance in March combined with numerous come from behind wins; the Warriors are in a good place.

Sunday the team sat down for a bit of fun for the Player's Banquet. The twenty year olds were saluted and the team was rallied for the post season. Great event!

The WHL draft lotto goes tomorrow. Who will get the first pick? Regina? Swifty?

It is going to be an exciting race to the Mem Cup... and the Crushed Can is ready to rock. The Epic Playoff Hockey will be under way before we know it. Stay tuned we will have a fine tuned game preview as we get closer to the weekend.

Big Win

It was a sentimental night in the Jaw. The night began with Yara Awards Night kicking off the festivities. This year's winner included:
Top Scorer- Dylan Hood
Fan's Choice- Spencer Edwards
Molson Cup- Quinton Howden
MVP- Thomas Heemskerk/Quinton Howden
Humanitarian- Spencer Edwards
Top Defencemen- Collin Bowman
Top Goaltender- Thomas Heemskerk
Mark MacKay Hustle Award- Spencer Edwards
Rookie of the Year- Morgan Rielly
Most Improved- Joel Edmundson
Most Sportsmanlike- Sam Fioretti
Scholastic Player of the Year- Sam Fioretti
Unsung Hero- Kendall McFaull

The first Warriors Captain, Mark MacKay was on hand for the final puck drop. WHL Commissioner, Ron Robison gave his wishes along with Mayor Hagel. Shaw broadcasted the final game in the Crushed Can.

Both the first two periods were remained scoreless. The third period featured a Collin Bowman maker to give the Warriors the lead before Michael Ferland tied it up. Overtime would bring no winner. To a shoot out we would go!

Both Dylan Hood and Quinton Howden were unsuccesful against Corbin Boes. All three Brandon shooters would be stopped by the hot Thomas Heemskerk. Tony Honejsek it his first game back from injury notched the game winner to give the Warriors their final historic win in the regular season of the Crushed Can. Warriors take it 2-1.

A Couple Notes for Friday

First off, come early as Yara Awards night is going down! The presentation will get underway at 6:40. The Warriors will announce the Fan Favorite... MVP.... and many more.

Mark MacKay, the Warriors first Captain will be in attendance to drop the last puck of the regular season. It seems fitting he does so as from what anyone can remember, he scored the first goal for the Warriors back in 1984 of the pre-season after the move from Winnipeg. Mark's son, Matt will be playing for the Wheaties tomorrow night-- should be a fun night for him.

The Warriors air waves will have a vintage feel as the legendary Rob Carnie will be joining James Gallo for some of the broadcast tomorrow night. Ron Robison will also be in attendance.

It's going to be a legendary game topped of by the Salute to the 20's Banquet on Sunday. The three twenties are three great young men.... it will be a fun time celebrating their year and sending the boys into playoffs.

Shaw will be broadcasting live tomorrow night. The Can makes it interesting.... bad views and lights are hard to get around. Cory Flett and the great guys from Shaw did some feature stories on both the multiplex and Crushed Can... be sure to DVR it before you head out to the game.

Had a quick visit to the multiplex today. The bathrooms look great; cool tileing and colors. We all looked great sporting our hard hats and steel toe boots. Footage will be shown in tomorrows broadcast....

Lasty, Happy St. Patricks Day!

He ranks third among team defensemen in points, goals and power play goals (two), and ranks third on Moose Jaw in penalty minutes. McIlrath established a career-high with his 18th assist of the season in a 5-3 win vs. Regina on March 1. He has also tied his career-high with four multi-point performances this season, including back-to-back two-assist efforts on January 19 vs. Lethbridge and January 21 at Edmonton. McIlrath recorded at least one point in six of eight games from October 13 vs. Kootenay to November 5 at Regina, registering seven points (two goals, five assists) during the stretch. He ranked second on Moose Jaw with a plus-20 rating, having made a plus-42 improvement in plus/minus rating over the previous season. He also tied for third among team defensemen in goals, assists and points, and led the Warriors and ranked seventh in the league in penalty minutes. The second-year defenseman was selected to participate in the 2010 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Top Prospects Game on January 20 as a member of Team Orr, and he finished second in the Hardest Shot event at the Skills Competition with a 91.8 mph shot. Top Ten Moments

Check out Kelly Remple's top ten moments in the Crushed Can.... http://rodpedersen.blogspot.com/

A Reputation to Hold

A team is made up of many types of players. Goal scorers, grinders, shut down defensemen, high energy guys and perhaps the most controversial role of the agitator. Opposing teams and fans hate them; home town crowds love them.

Cody Beach has earned his stripes as the Warriors best player to get in the oppositions heads. With over 232 PIM’s this season alone, Cody has already shattered last year’s total of 157. Fans may remember the great Rob Trumbley, Rob holds the Warrior records for most PIM’s in a season with 342 in 92-93. His career total was a whopping 866.

Fan Love
Rob and Cody clearly play a different style of game but both know about spending time in the sin bin. Did Warrior fans love Rob? Of course they did. Do fans in Moose Jaw love Cody Beach? They absolutely do. Will every fan love these type of players—probably not.

According to former Warriors broadcaster Rob Carnie, Rob Trumbley was one of the best fighter’s in the league and just one dirty player in his time. Rob didn’t go looking for trouble, but was always ready to go. Carnie believes Beach may be more comparable to former Warriors like Shawn Limpright and Sean O’Connor who fit the agitator description. O’Connor had 193 PIM’s in 2000/01 and was known for his antics. Both players are still playing professional hockey today.

Multi-dimensional
Beach not only has made a statement with his 6’6 frame but also with his scoring numbers. Beach sits in 5th position in the Warriors scoring race. With 37 assists; 13 of them on the power play, Cody Beach has totalled 48 points this season. In 55 games for the tribe, Beach has 31 of his points in the red and white. Cody had just 14 points last season with the Hitmen. Of course, with more experience under his belt coming into this season his offense has increased and it seems he has found a good place in the Moose Jaw line up. “The thing about Cody is that along with his reputation, which is warranted, comes a big body packed with skill, speed and great vision,” said Warriors Radio Broadcaster James Gallo. “Sometimes people forget just how much skill he has. He opens up room out there for his team mates, like Howden and Svendsen and can make passes that most people can’t,” added Gallo.

Cody believes his heightened scoring is a testament to the new surroundings. “I credit my success to my line mates and the structure put in place by coach Hunchak and the opportunities the coaching staff have given me,” remarked Cody. “Coming from Calgary, Cody became one of our top six forwards and is getting those top minutes,” commented Dave Hunchak on Cody’s point totals with the tribe. “He brings size and offense—and of course the agitation factor,” he said. “When he is on his game he brings so much to the ice. Our job is to bring all of his attributes out as a full package,” added Dave.

Brotherly Love
Cody’s size and skill have not gone unnoticed by the NHL scouts. Cody was drafted last season by the St. Louis Blues in the 5th round. It’s quite clear hockey runs in the Beach blood. Cody’s older brother Kyle finished his WHL career in Spokane last season. Drafted 11th overall in 2008, Kyle like Cody racked up some time in the penalty box. One hundred and eighty six minutes to be exact.

A Reputation to Hold
Cody was recently named the most “irritating player” in the Eastern Conference through a poll of GM’s, Coaches and Players in Eastern Conference and compiled by Bruce Luebke, the voice of the Brandon Wheat Kings. Cody’s thoughts on the title? “It’s good to know that teams know I’m in the game night in and night out, even if it’s on the score sheet or in their heads,” said Beach. “Cody’s reputation is well deserved, but each and every night you know where he is on the ice. When he is able to get others of their game, Cody’s at his best,” added Gallo.

It’s Not Easy
In hockey everyone has a favourite player. Most times it is the top scorer or the goal tender. Rarely do people dislike a goal tender or a top scorer. But what would be like to be that “token” agitator? Is it easy to be talked about and continuously scrutinized? “It’s never easy. People judge you left, right and center—from players to fans and referees but it is just something that comes with the play,” commented Beach.

If you ask a young Moose Jaw Warriors fan, they will tell you that Cody Beach never misses a high five coming on or off the ice and always has time for a picture or autograph. An ear to ear grin every time he jokes with the Warriors security before taking to the ice for warm ups shows his lighter side.

It Takes All Kinds
When it comes down to it, Cody Beach is an 18 year old hockey player. He plays the game he loves. Perhaps some people forget he is a just a teenager. He has made it to the WHL and perhaps some day the NHL on his hockey talent. The WHL and NHL need all types of players. Former Warriors Theoren Fleury, although lacking in stature was one of the most agitating players in the NHL… paired with his scoring talent Theo used his ability to get under the other teams skin as an advantage on the ice. “Theo thrived off being a “villain” in Regina—he loved to be hated and it worked for him,” commented James Gallo on Theo’s ability to get noticed.

Warrior’s fans will have the luxury of seeing Cody Beach come into his own in the Jaw. Some of his goals scored for the tribe this year have been highlight reel worthy and his talent is undeniable. Whether it is his glove dropping fights or his crowd encouraging gestures, Cody Beach is one to watch when he takes the ice.

Ah Sweet Memories

From "Taking Note" and the great Rob Carnie, here are Rob's vivid memories of the Can.
For the full story, hit up Greg's blog.... http://gdrinnan.blogspot.com/

This, hockey fans, is what the Crushed Can and memories are all about . . .

“I started attending hockey games and playing hockey at the MJCC in the fall of '74 when the Carnie family moved to Moose Jaw from Regina. I played in ‘Learn to Play’ for a season and among the other boys was my childhood friend Greg Thatcher. I remember his father Colin ‘coaching’ us while smoking a cigar and telling me I would never be able to take a backhander with a ‘damn curve on the blade of your stick." Why the hell do I remember that?“I CLEARLY remember my next season . . . in the Church Minor Hockey Association with the St. Joseph Seals, my first ‘real’ team! We practised every Monday morning at 7 in one COLD Civic Centre. We won the championship that season.

“I remember everything was painted orange and blue, including the ice cleaning machine which was an old Willy's Jeep with the ice cleaning apparatus welded on. It even had a name . . . The Connor's Pup. I have no idea why it had a name.“I remember an old gentleman named Sid who took tickets. He was always smiling and always well-dressed.“I remember the Regina Silver Foxes coming into Moose Jaw to play the Canucks and my sister's boyfriend, Dave Desautels, who wore No. 10 for the Foxes, blowing out a knee in front of my eyes. He taught me to skate.“I remember the Japanese national team playing at the Civic Centre and a young man named Doug Smail dominating for the home side in a 4-2 victory.

The place was packed.“I remember what a wonderful player Chris Chelios was as a boy . . . he played two seasons in Moose Jaw.“I remember hundreds of people smoking while watching the games . . . cigarettes, cigars and pipes . . . and the blue haze that hung over the ice after each Canucks game.“I saw every home game in a five-year stretch where the Moose Jaw Canucks went to the SJHL championship final versus the Prince Albert Raiders every season. We lost every time.

I remember a full-scale brawl in the pregame warmup of one of those games. There were sticks and gloves and helmets, blood and hair all over the ice. There were no penalties.“I remember the Warriors moving here from Winnipeg. I thought we should have called them the Canucks.“I remember Graham James. Shame.“I remember stepping into the broadcast booth as a cocky 21-year-old to assist Bryn Griffiths, then the voice of the Warriors, and thinking I was ‘The Goods!’

“I remember some wonderful young men wearing Warriors jerseys and some wonderful young hockey players. No one was more dynamic and entertaining than Theoren Fleury. No one.“I remember the adrenaline flowing through my body minutes before ‘Showtime’ on 800 CHAB. I loved that. I used to live for it.“I remember my old Dad walking up the steep stairs before Warriors games and looking up at me in the broadcast booth and grinning. He was proud of me. He never told me that. I just knew it. I loved him more than I can describe. I miss him.

“And . . . I'll miss the Civic Centre!”

Coyotes Leaving the Desert?

I had the opportunity to see a playoff game last year in the desert heat of Arizona. Beautiful arena.... and during the game... great fans! The facility itself is incredible. Fun and excitment outside, bands... music... restaurants and a huge screen to watch games prior to the actual Coyotes game.

Can't say one bad thing about the entire experience... I think it would be too bad if the franchise moved but the bottom line is the bottom line.

It's all over the news today about the unrest between Bettman, Chicago Businessman Matthew Hulsizer and the Goldwater Institute. With the possible down fall of the franchise in Phoenix; fans in Winnipeg are getting excited... Would you like to see another Canadian Hockey team?

Here is the story from TSN

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Tuesday night that the conservative Goldwater Institute "has placed a cloud on the bonds" needed to complete the sale of the Phoenix Coyotes to Chicago businessman Matthew Hulsizer.

"I quite frankly don't know who the people there report to or are accountable to," Bettman said, "but it fascinates me that whoever is running the Goldwater Institute can actually substitute their judgment for that of the Glendale City Council by, in effect, overturning a duly enacted resolution of the city and one that was enacted in public session."

Last Thursday, Glendale mayor Elaine Scruggs said the Goldwater Institute had "taken the unprecedented step" of warning bond-rating agencies that the city's agreement on a new lease for the Coyotes to play at the city-owner Jobing.com Arena violated the Arizona constitution.
In response to Scruggs, the Goldwater Institute pointed to an op-ed piece in Thursday's Arizona Republic by institute president and chief executive officer Darcy Olsen saying it would be wrong to give Glendale "a free pass" to break the state's prohibition on government entities subsidizing private enterprise.

Bettman said his request to meet with Olsen was rejected, though Olsen did offer to join Bettman for a joint press conference.

"This situation is far too serious for such game play," Bettman said. "My hope is somehow Goldwater and Glendale can find a way to get this done, promptly."
Olsen said his organization had offered to meet with Bettman, Hulsizer and Scruggs in a setting "open to journalists to ensure transparency for the public."
"To date, only Mr. Hulsizer has indicated an interest in meeting," Olsen added, saying his group has no information regarding the negotiations. "Whatever the outcome, we continue to hope that all parties will respect the (state) constitution and render legal action unnecessary."
Glendale must sell US$116 million in bonds to provide Hulsizer with money to complete the transaction. Hulsizer would buy the team from the NHL, which purchased the Coyotes in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the fall of 2009.

Bettman said the bonds remain the one obstacle left to be cleared.
"Based on what we have been told by the bond underwriters the market for these bonds, solely because of the Goldwater threat, has been impacted," Bettman said. "In light of their conduct in this matter, I question whether this is really an organization that is concerned with the public interest despite a mission statement that calls for expanding free enterprise and support for the public interest."
The Coyotes have lost tens of millions of dollars virtually every season since moving from Winnipeg in 1995.

Hulsizer said during the telecast of a Phoenix game in his hometown Chicago that the concerns raised by the Goldwater Institute are raising interest rates on the bonds Glendale has to sell.
"The rate that the city would have to pay is unnecessarily high," he said, "to the tune of $100 million over the next 30 years. That is due to the Goldwater Institute's questions."
Bettman said it's the NHL's continued hope that the sale to Hulsizer can be completed.
"There is a deal structure for Matt Hulsizer to buy the Coyotes from the league," he said. "There are arrangements in place approved that would enable the Coyotes to live happily ever after in Jobing.Com Arena and that would ensure that the arena doesn't go dark."

Prospects in Playoffs
