Generals Advance

Hats off to our Moose Jaw Generals who completed the sweep of the first round of the SMAAAHL playoffs, knocking out the Beardies on Saturday in double OT. Cory Millette (draft pick of the Red Deer Rebels) scored the OT game winning goal.

The Generals will wait for the other series to wrap up before moving on to their next opponent. The SK Contacts also wrapped up their series on the weekend.

Warriors Update

WARRIORS CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT
The Warriors started the week off with a commanding 3-0 win over the Swift Current Broncos Wednesday night before heading into another meeting with the high flying Saskatoon Blades.

It was Co-op Family Fun Night Saturday night in Moose Jaw. In front of a sell out crowd, the Warriors took to the ice for what was sure to be an intense game. First period, Warriors got on the board from a Spencer Edwards marker. Thomas Heemskerk had a great start to the night; holding off two Blade power plays.
Second period would be well played by both teams. Neither team would manage to find the back of the net but the Warriors were able to ward off another power play by the Blades. The single goal of the first period would hold up for second twenty minutes.
Third period would have Stephan Elliot bouncing a puck towards the Warriors crease and in. Tie game with over half the period to go. Overtime would bring no winner. Curtis Hamilton would beat Heemskerk in the shoot out for the win. Warriors fall in OT 2-1. Although a loss on Saturday, the Warriors three points last week would be good enough to clinch them a spot in the post season.

TWO POINTS ON THE LINE FOR TRIBE
The Regina Pats are in the hunt for a play off berth. Just 3 points out of 8th place, the Queen City kids are chasing both Prince Albert and Lethbridge who are both sitting with 55 points. The Pats are coming off of a 9-3 loss at the hands of the Brandon Wheat Kings. The Regina Pats did seem to find their way prior to the weekend beating going 4-3 in Swift Current and a 3-2 win in the Calgary outdoor game.

Regina has nine games left, all with division teams. The Pats will be looking to find much needed points when they match up with the Warriors for three more games, Brandon and Saskatoon for a pair, a single with Prince Albert & a final game with Swift Current.

Regina is 3-6-0-1 in their last ten games. The Warriors record in their last ten is 3-5-1-1.

FINAL MATCH UP WITH THE RAIDERS
The Warriors will host the Prince Albert Raiders Friday. The Raiders sit in 8th place; tied with the Hurricanes for the final playoff spot. This will be the last meeting between these two teams and the last in the Civic Center.

The Warriors are 4-3 against the Raiders and will be looking for one more win to solidify the series. Puck drops at 7:00 pm. Get your tickets today! 694.5711

Fight Night in the Jaw

Warriors and Broncos's got a little messy in the last few seconds. For some reason the score sheet on the dub site is not working, but according to the original copy, 6 game misconduct penalties were handed out for the fight that ensued after Thomas Heemskerk was taken out.

Collin Bowman, Dylan McIlrath and Brett Lyon were all involved in the altercations. Jordan Peddle, Trevor Cameron and Graeme Craig were the Broncos that also received matching penatlites.

Here is a look at what happened... be sure to watch until the end as a Bronco player nearly gets into it with the Warriors bench...

Earlier in the night, Brett Lyon took on Josh Derko... listen to James Gallo's call on the fight...

Fans are likely still talking about Sebastian Svendsen's goal last night... it was a beauty. Hopefully we can post it later in the day.

The players are back on the ice at 10 am this morning for a practice as they get ready to host the Blades on Saturday.

Warriors Hold Broncos Scoreless

Only seconds into the first period, Dylan McIlrath dropped the gloves to get the game underway. Brett Lyon followed suit. A single goal would be scored by Matt Grant, his 5th of the season. 1-0 Moose Jaw after the first twenty.

Second period would be all Warriors. Goals from Sebastian Svendsen and Cody Beach would give the Warriors a 3-0 lead heading into intermission.

The Warriors would fire on Mark Friesen relentlessly in the third, but he would turn every Warriors shot away. A line brawl broke out in the final minute of play sending McIlrath, Lyon, Bowman and just prior to that, Beach to the dressing room early.

Heemskerk claimed second star of the evening and Cody Beach took home first star.

Bronco Notes...

BRONCO BANTER:
(Feb. 19th: Swift Current 5 at Brandon 6) The Swift Current Broncos wrapped up their season series with the Brandon Wheat Kings falling 6-5 Saturday night in front of a crowd of 2,233 at the Credit Union i-Plex. Wheat King Mark Stone would waste no time scoring the first goal of the night two minutes into play. Less than three minutes later, Shayne Wiebe would score two consecutive goals and put the Wheat Kings up by three. After twenty minutes of play, the Broncos would trail 5-0 as both Matt MacKay and Scott Glennie would add additional singles. Midway through the second period, Jordan Evans would put the Broncos on the board slipping one past Wheat King netminder Liam Liston. Shortly after, Adam Lowry would make it a 5-2 contest capitalizing off a feed from Christian Magnus. In the third period, Wheat King Paul Ciarelli would be called for slashing allowing Tanner Muth to capitalize on the man advantage and put the Broncos within two. Less than two minutes later, Magnus would further the Broncos scoring streak notching his sixth of the season and making it 5-4.

Unfortunately, the Wheat Kings would revive their two goal lead shortly after as David Toews would slip one past Mark Friesen midway through the third. An empty Bronco net in the dying minutes of play would allow Bronco Trevor Cameron to light the lamp notching his fifth of the season and make it a 6-5 final. The Broncos had 29 shots on net whereas the Wheat Kings had 31. The Broncos were 1 for 2 on the power play while the Wheat Kings were 0 for 1. The Broncos fall to eleventh in the Eastern Conference, one point behind the Regina Pats and three behind the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Tuesday Thoughts

Good morning! Back from the holiday Monday and a busy week for the Warriors. Coming off of a 1-2 week with two of those losses being at home, the Warriors will be looking to post two home wins this week.

Wednesday night the Bronco's will be in town. Swifty is trying to grab one of the last playoff spots in a tight bottom half of the conference. This will be the very last time the Warriors and Broncos will meet in the Crushed Can. Ahhh a historic moment!

Another bit of history Saturday night as it will be the last time the Blades will play on the Civic Center ice. It will be the last meeting in Moose Jaw between these two heated rivals... I do not think you want to miss this one!

Sunday the players will be at Canadian Tire to sign their 10/11 poster. The team will be there from 2-4 pm.

The team practices in the morning's this week as the school system is on holidays.

Everyone is still buzzing from the Skills Comp. A ton of great feedback... it seems that everyone enjoyed seeing the players personalities and of course talent. A bright future this team has... as exemplified with hardest shot coming from Joel Edmundsen who is eligible to be drafted this summer and Morgan Rielly winning the fastest skater in his rookie season! Look out for these two!

Warriors Can't Find Equilizer

Unlike their 6-3 performance the night before, the Moose Jaw Warriors struggled for offense in Saturday night's 3-2 loss against the Raiders. Mark McNeill was the first Raider to score. Brandon Herrod managed to get another past Heemskerk before the final buzzer of the first period.

Just a single goal in the second would come from Raider Jordan Rowley. The Warriors would find the back of the net in the final frame, but it would be too little too late. Quinton Howden and Sebastian Svendsen's goals would be 2 of 21 shots the tribe would fire on net.

Thomas Heemskerk seen 18 shots on net in the first period alone and 40 on the night. The Warriors have lost three straight games at home. The Warriors will return to the ice on Wednesday night to take on the Broncos.

Hitmen Knock Off Warriors

The Warriors just didn't seem to get their stride tonight. Facing off with the bottom of the league Calgary Hitmen proved more difficult than one might imagine.
The Hitmen took the early lead only moments into the first period. Jimmy Bubnick found a hole on Warriors rookie goal tender Brandon Stone and made no mistake.

Two more Calgary markers would give the visitors a 2 goal lead that would not be met by the tribe. The Warriors only goal of the night came from Andrew Johnson nearing the end of the second. A scoreless third period would bring Calgary a 3-1 victory and a much needed two points.

The Warriors have a home and home series against the Raiders this weekend. A crucial 4 points is on the line. Watch your hometown team Saturday night back at the Civic Center.

Monday Morning

Happy Valentine's Day readers!

Quiet day around the rink, the players are taking a much needed rest day away from the ice.

What a weekend of hockey. A thrilling shoot out win Friday night followed by a heated match up with the Saskatoon Blades. It seems these two teams are building quite the rivalry as we head into the play off stretch.

There has been a bit of controversy and upset over some of the referee's calls Saturday night. It would seem it was going to be one tough game for the stripes the minute the puck dropped. In the photo on the left, Brayden Schenn and Kendall McFaull seem to be having a scuffle as fans look on.

The Warriors will host Saskatoon again next Saturday. The tribe will return to Saskatoon the following Saturday.

Busy week ahead for the tribe. Calgary will be in the Jaw Wednesday, in Prince Albert Friday and hosting the Raiders Saturday. Sunday the Warriors will host their first ever Skills Competition.

A few other thoughts...

The Blazers and Giants travelled all the way to the Yukon for Hockey Day in Canada. Very cool idea.

The Pats and Hitmen will take part in the second outdoor WHL game on Monday. Hopefully lots of fan's come out to watch.... could Regina ever host an outdoor game at Mosaic? With Saskatchewan weather... it would be tough... but Sask fans are used to bundling up in November for Rider games.

The playoff race is on and from the looks of things the Warriors are stuck in 5th place for the time being. Medicine Hat fell to the Pat's in a shoot out Saturday night, but still have a game in hand and a 8 point lead. Kootenay has a 9 point lead.

Medicine Hat has 16 games left to go. Kootenay has 15 games to go like Moose Jaw.

Warriors final 15 games look like this:
Calgary
Prince Albert (2)
Swift Current
Saskatoon (3)
Prince Albert
Kootenay
Lethbridge
Regina (3)
Brandon (2)

It is going to be an interesting final 5 weeks! Have a great Monday...

Blades Dig in for a Win

The Warriors weren't only trying to fill up the net with pucks Saturday, but also full of pet toys for the Moose Jaw Humane Society in the "Filling Empty Nets for Needy Pets" campaign. The night began with a Cody Beach goal just 1:03 into the first. Jake Trask found the back of Heemskerk's net; Curtis Hamilton would follow suit making it 2-1 Blades. Marek Viedensky finished off the period with one last goal for the visitors.

Warriors would fight back in the second with a Joey Kornelsen marker. That would be all for scoring in the second. The name of the game was... fights. The two teams were heated from the moment they stepped on the ice; spilling over from their last meeting only days ago.
Third period, Warriors star Quinton Howden would find the game tieing goal. 3-3... a tough fought period would result in a bad angle shot and a goal for Marek Viedensky in the final minute of play. With Heemskerk on the bench, the tribe would make one last charge. The Blades would regain control and notch an empty net goal from Jake Trask.

Tough loss for the tribe and a tougher night for the referees. Blades win it 5-3. Thomas Heemskerk earned second star honors with his 48 shot performance.

BC:
Brandon Potomak (F)

Alberta:
Torrin White (F)

Saskatchewan:
Daniel Wapple (G)
Carter Hansen (F)

Manitoba:

These players represent 8 players selected by the Moose Jaw Warrior Hockey Club in last draft year.

“This event will be a great experience for these young players,” commented Director of Hockey Operations Alan Millar. “It is a testament to the quality of players selected by our team’s scouting staff in 2010. A job well done by Robert MacLachlan and his scouting staff,” added Millar.

Mike Keane to have Jersey Retired Tonight

Courtesy of the Winnipage Free Press: The Manitoba Moose will retire the first jersey in their history Feb. 12 when Mike Keane’s No. 12 goes up to the rafters of the MTS Centre.

When the Moose play the San Antonio Rampage that night, Keane will be honoured with the number retirement and a special tribute. (Note: do you remember who the assistant coach is of the Rampage? Former Dir. Hockey Ops Jeff Truitt)

The team’s former captain played five seasons here in the AHL after a storied NHL career that saw him win the Stanley Cup with three different teams.

The former Montreal Canadiens captain played 1,230 regular-season NHL games and 443 more in the AHL before the Moose decided last summer not to offer him a new contract.
The last pro jersey retired in Winnipeg was Thomas Steen’s No. 25 near the end of the Jets’ tenure.

Congrats to Mike Keane!

Notes from the Opposition:

COMEBACK CRUSHES COUGARS: It was déjà vu for the Oil Kings on Tuesday at Rexall Place, as they overcame a sizeable deficit after 40 minutes to score four goals in the third period and post a dramatic victory over the Prince George Cougars for the second time this season. The Oil Kings and Cougars' first matchup of the year was on Oct. 10 at Rexall, and the home side trailed 6-3 after two periods only to come back and score four straight goals, eventually winning 8-7 in overtime as LW Dylan Wruck tallied the game-winner with less than one second left in sudden-death. Tuesday's thrilling affair was almost an exact replica, as the Oil Kings trailed 5-2 going into the final frame only to score four times and emerge with a 6-5 victory. Edmonton outshot Prince George 26-5 in the third period, and none other than Wruck notched the game-winner with 1:33 left on the clock. LW Rhett Rachinski, D Adrian Van de Mosselaer, C Travis Ewanyk, C Jordan Hickmott and LW Mike Piluso also scored in the win.

SEASON TO DATE: The Oil Kings currently have a 25-26-1-3 record this season, which includes two modern franchise record five-game winning streaks during the first half of the campaign. So far in 2011, the Oil Kings are 6-10-1-1 and are on a one-game winning streak following Tuesday’s comeback victory over Prince George. They sit in sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 54 points. Prince Albert and Swift Current each have 49 points to sit in seventh and eighth place, respectively, with one and three more games played than Edmonton, respectively. The Oil Kings and Warriors (31-20-2-2) are playing each other tonight for their fourth and final matchup of the season. Moose Jaw leads the season series 2-1, with a 3-2 Edmonton win on Oct. 3, as well as 3-2 and 6-3 Moose Jaw wins on Jan. 16 and Jan. 21, respectively.

WRUCK’S RECORD: Oil Kings LW Dylan Wruck scored his 30th goal of the season on Feb. 2 against the Tri-City Americans. With his 30th goal, the 18-year-old Saskatoon native set a new Oil Kings modern franchise record for goals in a single season, as he passed C Brenden Dowd, who tallied 29 in 2008-09. Wruck’s 32nd goal on Tuesday versus Prince George bumped him up to 58 points on the year, putting him four points back of Dowd and LW Jeff Lee, who scored 62 points apiece during the 2008-09 campaign. Wruck has 17 games remaining to score five more points and surpass Dowd and Lee to claim the modern franchise record for points in a single season as well.

VINCOUR MAKES HISTORY: RW Tomas Vincour made Oil Kings modern franchise history on Wednesday when he was called up to the NHL's Dallas Stars from their AHL affiliate Texas Stars and played his first career NHL game. Vincour is the first former member of the modern Oil Kings franchise to play an NHL regular season game. The 20-year-old logged 10:29 of ice time and registered one shot on goal as the Stars lost 3-2 in OT to the Phoenix Coyotes. Vincour played 147 regular season games with the Oil Kings during the 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons and tallied 50 goals and 51 assists for 101 points during that time. He was selected by Dallas in the fifth round (129th overall) at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and has played 44 games for the AHL's Texas Stars this season, scoring five goals and seven assists for 12 points.

INJURY REPORT: The Oil Kings are currently without the services of D Griffin Reinhart and RW Josh Lazowski, who are both out of the lineup for the remainder of the regular season as a result of injuries. Reinhart (wrist) was the top-scoring Edmonton defenceman prior to his injury on Jan. 29 against Prince Albert that will see him miss eight weeks. The 16-year-old rookie defenceman from West Vancouver, BC tallied six goals and 19 assists through 44 games. He was also selected as the team’s Unsung Hero for January. Lazowski (shoulder) was also a top point producer, as the 19-year-old first-year winger from Leduc, AB scored nine goals and 19 assists through 32 games.

Finally, roster proofing for the Skills Competition, arranging a radio interview for Dave Hunchak, website updates and some work on this year's team poster (Poster night is coming up on the 19th).... I think you are going to love it (think nastalgic Crushed Can).

Big games this weekend.... Edmonton and Saskatoon. Tomorrow will have insights into both match ups.

Tuesday Thoughts... tweet tweet

Who is the guy on the left....? Maybe you haven't seen him on the ice for the Coyotes a whole lot... but maybe you have on TWITTER!

Today we are going to talk TWITTER. Are you on twitter? Maybe you are wondering what the heck it is. Twitter is basically updates, short and quick phrases, photos, links and blurbs. It has caught on with celebrities and allows us common folk to see what the stars are up to every minute of every day. Some "twitter's" are great to follow... others don't do enought tweeting to make it worth while following them.

Here are a few interesting people to follow on twitter:

1. First, of course, the Moose Jaw Warriors. We tweet as MJWARRIORS. We tweet what we are up to on a daily basis, game scores, tid bits of information and give away prizes. Check us out... www.twitter.com/MJWARRIORS

2. All of the TSN Gentlemen... James Duthie, Darren Dreger, Dan O'Toole and my favorite... Jay Onrait. They always have the latest in sports and hilarious banter.

3. Paul Bissonette. A twitter sensation, and worth the follow! Paul is part of the Phoenix Coyotes and quite frankly is more famous for his tweets then hockey. A little on the edge, but very fun and interesting (reader discretion advised); Paul gives you an inside look at what it is like playing the NHL. He tweets as "BizNasty2point0". Paul even has his own line of clothing based off of his twitter (Sauce Hockey). Paul does do some very good things through twitter, making it his mission to bring attention to the homeless in America. Paul has over 40,000 followers.

4. Corey Nyhagen. He is our Dir. of Business Operations... and as things start to roll with the new multiplex, he will definetly have some interesting tweets for you. Follow him as CoreyNy.

If you dont have a twitter account, sign up for one. You can tweet back to peoples tweets, make your own, follow your favorite people, get the latest information.... tweet tweet!

Joey Kornelsen reads a story to the Pre-schoolers at Calvery Baptist Church in Moose Jaw. The young tots were learning about "people in the community."

The kids were great and full of giggles and questions.

Thank you for the invite!

Happy Monday

Happy Monday! What a weekend.

Two tough road games, Kinsmen Celebrity Dinner, Super Bowl....

It might not have been the weekend the Warriors had hoped for, but they are back in Moose Jaw and will surely be back on the ice today in preparation for two games vs. Brayden Schenn and the Saskatoon Blades. Can you mention the Blades without saying Brayden Schenn's name? They do have some great talent, Quinton Howden and Brayden Schenn's Team Canada mate, Curtis Hamilton is also someone to watch. The Warrriors will head to S'toon on Wednesday and will host the Blades Saturday.

Friday night the Oil Kings will be in town. Talk about a busy week!

The Kinsmen Sports Celebrity Dinner went Saturday night at the Heritage. NHLer Bryan Trottier did a great job along with Gene Makowsky and World Series Champion Jack Morris. Hats off to the Kinsmen; they put on a fantastic event. The Warriors donated a Quinton Howden team Canada jersey, it went for $2,200.00. A birthday party with Morty went for a stunning $2,800.00.

Can't say I am a huge NFL fan, getting more interested... but I did like a few of the commericals. Crysler had an ad that caught my attention with Eminem. Wasn't a big fan of the BEP's half time show. Bad sound for the first few songs... had a better ending. Just couldn't cheer for the Steelers-- not a Big Ben fan.

The Warriors will be visiting a pre-school this morning for a people of the community visit. The pre-school brings in various people in the community. Today is Warrior day! Should be fun.

Just going through fan mail this morning. You would be surprised how many letters the players receive in a week. They love them; so keep them coming.

Group Shot

Dallas Ehrhardt gets tagged... and bear hugged.

Alberta, Here We Come!

The playoff hunt is on. The top teams in the East are battling it out for the top four positions that would give them an opportunity to host the first two games of a seven game playoff series.

The Warriors are neck and neck with the Kootenay Ice and Medicine Hat Tigers. The Warriors are just 2 points back of the 3rd place Ice and a single point back of the 4th place Tigers. The Saskatoon Blades and Red Deer Rebels sit in positions one and two with only 3 points separating the teams. The top two teams in the East have produced over 75 points and are likely to continue on that same pace.

If playoffs started today, the Warriors would face the Tigers with the series starting in the Hat. Perhaps the toughest building to play in come playoffs would be Medicine Hat. The entire arena is sold out and interested fans are on a wait list to get a ticket into the building. Noisy and proud, the Tigers den is a tough place to play.

Yet, the Warriors have 20 games left to finish before the final playoff spots are concrete. The Warriors will face both Kootenay and Medicine Hat just once more this season. The tribe will have a tough 4 games with the Saskatoon Blades along with three more battles with the Pats and a single bout with Red Deer.

The two teams the Warriors are chasing (Medicine Hat and Kootenay) will face off twice before the end of March. The other end of the play off race is even tighter than the top. With 16 point separating 5th from 6th, the bottom three teams are only points apart. Edmonton, Swift Current, Prince Albert, Lethbridge, Brandon and Regina are vying for the final three spots.

Swift Current looked like a steady contender to kick off the season, but after a recent slump; they could just as easy fall out of playoffs as they could earn a spot. The Warriors have a number of match ups with the bottom 6 teams. The Warriors will take on Prince Albert three more times, Swift Current once and Brandon twice. These teams will surely be pushing hard to earn points in the back half of the season.

This year’s Warriors team is one of scoring talent. The Warriors have six players ranked in the top 100 scorers of the WHL. Dylan Hood, Quinton Howden, Spencer Edwards, Tony Honejsek, Sebastian Svendsen and Cody Beach are all in the top 100 point earners. Thomas Heemskerk is the 8th ranked goalie in the league with 28 wins. With a strong defence, this team could make a great run at the playoffs.

VS RED DEER

Friday is the fourth and final meeting of the regular season between the Warriors and Red Deer Rebels. Moose Jaw is 0-3 against the Rebels, losing both at home and their only trip to Red Deer so far this season.

Sebastian Svendsen has two goals and three points against the Rebels, but all have come in three games as a member of the Prince Albert Raiders. Dylan Hood is pointless and a -4; Quinton Howden is pointless and a -5; Antonin Honejsek is pointless and a -3; Dylan McIlrath is pointless with 25 penalty minutes and is a -4; Thomas Heemskerk is 0-3 with a 3.07gaa and .900sv%.

Darcy Kuemper is 3-0 with a 0.00gaa and 1.000sv% with three shutouts against the Warriors; Brett Ferguson has a goal and five points; Byron Froese and Andrej Kudrna have a goal and four points each; Colin Archer, Adam Kambeitz, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Daulton Siwak have a goal and two points each; John Perrson and Alex Petrovic have one goal each.

Med Hat Notes to come....

Notes:

In no order, what so ever...

- Spencer Edwards is a possibility for the weekend match ups

- Med Hat is coming off of a heartbreaking lost vs Vancouver, where the Giants scored with 1

second left on the clock for a 3-2 loss

- Check out Brandon Stone's new mask. Quite the artwork.

- This weekend could be the first time in quite awhile where the Warriors top 6 forwards are all in the line up

- Dylan Hood is 5 games away from reaching his 300th WHL game.

- Red Deer stomped Prince Albert Wednesday night after PA had a 3-1 lead after the first. Final Score... 7-4 Red Deer.

- Spencer Edwards is a +18 on the season.... next highest is a +9 by Dallas Ehrhardt

-
