Tonight at the Civic Center it's FIGHT NIGHT- Tie One one for Men's Cancer.  All Warriors players will be arriving to tonights game in a special blue tie, embroidered with their initials.  A blue tie is the symbol of prostate cancer awarness; a common cancer in men.  A week ago the players did a photo shoot wearing their tie and tonight those photos (autographed and framed) along with the "game worn" tie will be up for auction.

The ties will be on display on the west side of the Civic Center from 6:00 until the start of the game.  The ties will then move over the the east side until the end of the 2nd intermission.  After the game, the ties will go live on the Warriors website (http://www.mjwarriors.ca/) for bid.  Bids can be emailed to communityrelations@mjwarriors.com. Point leaders for the Warriors in the first two games of the seaason:
Michal Hlinka- 2 points
Antonin Honejsek- 1 point
Jordan Wyton- 1 point
Sam Fioretti- 1 point
Spencer Edwards- 1 point

Goalie Thomas Heemskerk has seen 118 minutes of play and in that time faced 59 shots and saved 55 of them.  The Warriors have a 91.7% Pentalty Kill after the first weekand have not been able to capitalize on 9 power play opportunities.

Brandon comes into tonight with a 2-0 record.  Brandon took on the Pat's in their home opener weekend.  Mark Stone leads the way with 6 points.  Scott Glennie returned to the Wheaties earlier this week from Dallas and Brayden Schenn is still away at Kings camp.  Shayne Wiebe is the team captain this season for Brandon.

Who to watch for tonight:
Moose Jaw- Keep an eye out for #21 as Quinton Howden makes his 10/11 regular season debut.  After gaining some experience in Florida, Howden will be looking to come out strong.  Colling Bowman (#10) was named third star last Friday; look for Bowman to show a physical presence early on.  Dylan Hood (#28), Hood lead the way in the pre-season and although quiet in home opener weekend, Hood has the offensive firing power that may strike at any time.

Brandon- 6'3", 18 year old Mark Stone (#16) already has 1 goal and 5 assists in the first week of play. Captain Shayne Wiebe (#17) has had a point in four pre-season games.  Scott Glennie (#15), this 6'2" center is what of the elite players in the WHL, his possible return to the line up will be an advantage to the Wheaties.  Jordan Fransoo (#5), this D-man had an excellent pre-season and is only 17.

Warriors Visit John Chisholm School

A Captain's Journey- Spencer Edwards

Wearing the “C” on your chest as a hockey player, means you have been given a special honour. That “C” stands for leadership, responsibility and symbolizes a role model. The Warriors 2010/11 captain took a challenging road to his current title. Spencer Edwards was drafted by the Red Deer Rebels and was later cut from the team and sent back to the BCHL. The following season he would be traded to Seattle, and again would not make the WHL team. After a solid season with the Cowichan Valley Capitals, Spencer got an invite as a free agent to Warriors camp.
From the minute Spencer Edwards stepped on the ice it seemed his long journey across the WHL had come to an end. Spencer brought to the ice every characteristic of a Warriors player the coached were looking for. The first player to practice each day and a player who could be credited with hardest working accolades nearly every night seemed to fit right in to the tribe.

For Spencer, being named the captain of this year’s team is an incredible honour. “Some of the greatest hockey players have been captains and there has been many here in Moose Jaw,” said Edwards. “I feel privileged that the coaches and players feel I am the player for the job and I just hope to do my very best in the role,” added Spencer.

Spencer had many great captains in his hockey career; last year’s Warriors captain, Jason Bast is a captain Spencer hopes to model his role after. “Jason was a great captain for this team; I took a lot away from him. I had many first-class captains in Jr. A—they knew what it took to lead a team and I hope to do just that,” commented Spencer Edwards.

Wearing that “C” on his chest is almost a surreal experience for Edwards, “Considering a year ago I was just trying to make the team, having the honour of leading this team is incredible. The acceptance I felt on home opener from the crowd meant a lot to me,” added Edwards. Along with wearing the letter, Spencer knows many other responsibilities come with it. “Being the captain means I need to provide on ice leadership, stick up for my team mates, be consistent and always work hard,” said Captain Edwards.

Spencer won’t be alone when leading the tribe this season. He has four alternate captains, all selected based on their unique ability to motivate the team. “The older guys know what it takes to be a good team. Dylan McIlrath, Quinton Howden, Collin Bowman and Kendall McFaull are all great leaders and hockey players that people look up to,” remarked Edwards. “I know these four along with our veteran players like Dylan Hood and Thomas Heemskerk will be a great help to me this season,” added Spencer.

Spencer Edwards may have taken the long way to Moose Jaw, but the fans have welcomed him with open arms. Sometimes it takes a long time to find the right path—it’s quite clear Spencer has done just that.

Warriors Drop Home Opener

The Warriors dropped their season opener 4-1 tonight at the Civic Center. Neither team would manage scored a goal in the first period. Swift Current would come out of the gates firing in the second with two goals from Stepan Novotny and Taylor Vause. Antonin Honejsek would be the only Warrior to score with a top shelf marker over Friesen. Brad Hoban would find the back of the net on the power play to end the second.

The third period was quiet offensively with only a single goal coming in the dieing minutes on an empty netter for Brad Hoban. The story of the night was pentalites. Twenty three in total were handed out with 11 going to the Warriors. Captain Spencer Edwards dropped the gloves in the first followed by a couple other minor scuffles on the night.

The Warriors head to Bronco land tomorrow night for their home opener. The Warriors will look to rebound on tonight's 4-1 loss.

Warriors Move Another 20 Year Old

The Warriors have traded twenty year old forward Thomas Frazee and a 4th round pick in 2011 and a 6th round pick in 2012 to the Regina Pats in exchange a 2nd round Bantam draft pick in 2011 and a 5th round pick in 2013. Frazee had been with the tribe for nearly two seasons after coming in a trade from Medicine Hat.

Thomas Frazee was one of four 20 year olds left on the Warriors roster. With four talented twenty’s filling roster spots; a decision on over age players is never an easy one to make. "Over the past week to 10 days we have had to make some tough decisions regarding our hockey club. This was another one,” said Warriors Director of Hockey Operations.

“The key to this trade for our hockey club was clearing up our 20 year old situation at this time and acquiring a valuable asset in another 2nd round pick,” he added. “We now own 6 picks in the top two rounds of the 2011 and 2012 WHL Bantam Drafts. We thank Thomas for his time and efforts with the Warriors Hockey Club and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” commented Alan Millar.

Thomas will be heading to Regina in time to travel to Brandon tonight for the Pat’s first road game.

Another Warriors Trade

The Warriors have traded left winger Mike Forsyth to the Chilliwack Bruins for a conditional draft pick. Forsyth is from Calgary, AB and was acquired by the Warriors last season for 19 year old forward Matt MacKay in an early season trade with the Medicine Hat Tigers. The Warriors would like to wish Mike all the best with the Bruins and with his future hockey career. Mike will report to Chilliwack in the coming days.

Captain Edwards at the Helm

Moose Jaw, SK.--- The Warriors have named 20 year old forward Spencer Edward as the 2010/11 team captain. Edwards is entering his second year with the tribe after an outstanding 2009/10 season. Spencer is known for his heart, character and leadership around the dressing room and on the ice. “Spencer’s determination and leadership have earned him the right to lead this team,” said Head Coach Dave Hunchak.

Alternate captain’s for the season include 19 year old defensemen Collin Bowman; forward Quinton Howden and 18 year old defensemen Kendall McFaull and Dylan McIlrath. Each alternate captain brings a degree of leadership to the team and as whole will guide the 2010/11 Warriors squad with both passion and vision. “Edward’s supporting cast of alternate captains’ certainly will make for a strong group of players leading the way for the Warriors,” added Hunchak.

Captain Edwards and the Warriors take on the Swift Current Broncos in the season opener Friday September 24th at 7:00 pm. Puck drops at 7:00 pm with a special video presentation at 6:50pm.

Home Opener... What you can expect...

Over 250 walk up tickets have been sold today... if your planning on attending the LAST home opener in the Crushed Can, you can get your tickets online; http://www.mjwarriors.ca/... or call 694.5711.  With close to 2,200 season tickets space is limited!

Fans, be sure to be in your seat by 6:45... lights will be out for an awesome video portraying just how the Warriors have got to where we are today.  It's taken a lot of passionate players, moments, magic with a little bit of hard times all taking place under one "crushed" roof.  The video will show you a reverse look at just how much history lives here in Moose Jaw.  Don't be late, it is sure to be something to remember.

A full team intro will take place and everyones favorite moose, Morty will be back in full force.  Word has it his two biggest fans, Chief Turkey Feathers and Big Hair will be in attendance.
____________________________________________________________________________
What you can expect on the ice....
The Broncos finished the pre-season with a 2-5 record.  The Warriors had the reverse with 5-2.

If you recall, the last time these two teams met was in the final game of the regular season which turned out to be pivotal game for placement.  The Warriors only won one game last season against Swift.  It seems Swift Current is 20-1 over the past 3 seasons against the tribe... a stat Moose Jaw would like to change heading into Friday's game.

The Warriors will have a new face in net tomorrow night, Thomas Heemskerk.  Heemskerk was acquired last week from Everett for defensmen Chad Suer.  Heemskerk had a .927 save % last year and took home 24 wins in 42 games.

The Warriors can dress three overagers tomorrow... meaning one will not be in the line up.  Hood, Heemskerk, Frazee and Edwards will be looking to fill those three spots.

Quinton Howden and Dylan McIlrath still remain at their respective NHL club main camps.  No word on their return.

See you there!

Finally here! Stuffed mortys!

Checking in with Quinton Howden

Quinton Howden is having a blast with the Florida Panthers.  Howden attended rookie camp and was given the invite to main camp.  Quinton said he is loving the experience, "It's everything and so much more that I thought it would be."  "From the off-ice workouts to the skates.... its been pretty surreal," added Howden.

"It's great learning from the older players and it's been something I will never forget," said Quinton.

Quinton is on his way to Rochester, NY where the Panthers will face Boston tomorrow night in the second pre-season game for Florida.

It's Fight Night at the Civic Center Wednesday September 29

Tie one on for “Fight Night” on September 29th when the Moose Jaw Warriors take on the Brandon Wheat Kings, the Moose Jaw Warriors will be arriving to the game wearing personalized blue ties in tribute of Men’s Cancer month.

Those very ties along with an autographed signed photo of each player will be up for auction. Dedication ties will be available for $1.00 with all funds raised directly benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society. The goal will be to figuratively cover both blue lines with ties (which would be 200 ties). Fans are encouraged to join the fight and tie on their own blue tie or scarf next Wednesday.

The Warriors understand the importance of supporting the Canadian Cancer Society and bringing awareness to Men’s cancer awareness. Men are battling cancer throughout Canada, and Wednesday September 29th the Warriors will pay tribute to those who are fighting cancer and to those who have lost their lives to cancer.

Supporting cancer research is very important to many in the Warriors organization, Head Coach Dave Hunchak is one of them. “Having lost my father to cancer and witnessing my mother-in-law beating cancer into remission over the past 15 months, raising money for cancer research on all levels is a very personal cause. Most people in the world have been touched by the disease either directly or indirectly. I would like to personally thank the many people who have and will contribute to the fight and encourage the people in the fight to keep swinging,” commented Dave Hunchak.

A blue tie is a symbol of Prostate Cancer, a cancer an estimated 24,600 men will be diagnosed with this year. A man has a greater than 1 in 7 chance of developing prostate cancer in his lifetime according to 2009 statistics. But with the gracious support of the Warriors fans, the Warriors can fight cancer right here in Moose Jaw. Over the next two weeks, the Warriors want to raise $2,500 for cancer; funds the directly benefit cancer research and early detection education.

Gaye Stewart of the Canadian Cancer Society appreciates the Warriors continued support here in Moose Jaw. “The Moose Jaw Unit is very proud to be partner with the WHL and the Moose Jaw Warriors. Through education and fundraising, it brings awareness to both the players and the community in hopes that one day there will be no cancer. Congratulations to the players for participating in this event and we look forward to many more successful working relationships,” commented Unit Manager of the Moose Jaw Canadian Cancer Society, Gaye Stewart.

Edwards Shark Experience

Caught up with Spencer Edwards after his return to the Jaw from San Jose.  Spencer had a great time at Shark's Rookie Camp and talks about it below....

Q: Was this your first time to San Jose? How would you describe it?
A: "Yes, it was my first time there... it was much nicer than it is here right now! It was my first time to California... so it was cool to experience palm trees and the warm weather."

Q: Tell us about your experience in San Jose?
A: "It was pretty amazing.  I was treated great by the entire organization and fans.  It was great experience to see how hard the guys there work to get to that level."

Q: What was the highlight of your time there?
A: "Getting to be on the starting line up against the Canucks and seeing the team jet-- they travel like kings!"

Q: So a little different then our bus?
A: Emphatic nod and laugh

Q: Is there anything particular you learned there that you hope to bring back to the ice and locker room here in Moose Jaw?
A: "Overall, just how hard they work there.... and how independant you have to be.  Some of the guys have been battling for a spot for years now.. I want to bring that same work ethic back here and let my team mates know that it takes alot to get to the NHL."

Q: So, you would have been playing with now teammate Thomas Heemskerk.... did you get to know him before you both came back here?
A: "Yes we got to know each other at camp.  It's funny because we were jokingly talking about how great it would  be if he was traded to Moose Jaw.  When it did happen, he came and told me-- I thought he was joking around.  We were both exicited to get to continue playing together."

The Warriors will wrap up their pre-season schedule this weekend with a double header against the Brandon Wheat Kings. The Wheat Kings have won 2 of the pre-season games against the Regina Pats. The Warriors are 4-1 on the pre-season. The Warriors have had impressive statistics during the exhibition schedule.

The shots on goal have been heavily in the Warriors favor while on their home turf. In their first matchup, the Warriors fired 40 shots Swift Current's way. The next game, the Warriors managed 36 shots on net in the Pat's pre-season game. The tribe shot 33 pucks at Saskatoon last weekend. Along with an impressive shot total, the Warriors have limited the oppositions scoring chances with their strong defense and goal tending. Shots against the Warriors have been 16 (SC), 14 (REG) and 20 (SK) at home.

Warriors Import Michal Hlinka has three goals in 4 games and seems to be adjusting to Canadian hockey very well. Riley Reinbolt had a pair of goals on Saturday September 11th in Saskatoon. Dylan Hood, Sam Fioretti and Joey Kornelsen have multiple points in the pre-season.
Be sure to come to Saturday's game early as every seat in the Civic Center that is not claimed by a Season Ticket Holder will be posted with a "for sale" sign!

The Warriors head to Brandon Friday; listen live on Country 100 to both games.

Warriors Representing in Traverse City

Dylan McIlrath, Quinton Howden and Tony Honejsek are on their way to NHL camps. Best of luck to them all. Former Warrior Jason Bast will be heading to Traverse City with the Rangers.

Here's a bit more about Ranger Camp:

FROM NY RANGERS.COM
The annual prospect tournament is scheduled to begin on Sept. 11, when the Rangers’ prospects face-off against the Columbus Blue Jackets’ prospects. This marks the fifth consecutive year that a team of Rangers prospects will be going to Traverse City for the eight-team tournament.

A group of 23 prospects will represent the Rangers next month at the annual Traverse City Prospects Tournament, which the Blueshirts won in 2007. Nineteen of the 22 members of the 2010 roster are players whose NHL rights are currently owned by the Rangers. Eleven players are Rangers draftees from the past two years, while eight others have already signed their first NHL contracts with the team.

Seventeen of the 22 players participated in the Rangers’ annual Prospect Development Camp earlier this summer. This includes 2010 draft picks Dylan McIlrath, Christian Thomas, Andrew Yogan, Jason Wilson and Randy McNaught.

Forward Evgeny Grachev, the Rangers’ 2008 third round selection, will be returning to the tournament for the third straight season. He will be joined by fellow 2008 third round draft pick, defenseman Tomas Kundratek, who was a member of the Rangers’ Traverse City team last summer.

Five players from the 2009 draft class – forwards Ryan Bourque, Ethan Werek and Roman Horak, defenseman Daniel Maggio and goaltender Scott Stajcer – are also back from the 2009 team, as is defenseman Sam Klassen.

Competing in the tournament’s “Gretzky Division”, the Rangers will play round-robin games against Carolina, Columbus and Minnesota, beginning with the Sept. 11 tilt against Columbus’ prospects. Their placement in the round-robin will determine who they face in the championship round that concludes the tournament.

New NHL 11 out!

Dylan McIlrath did an interview this afternoon with Global Regina on the new NHL 11 video game.

Dylan took on Global reporter Tom Vernon as the Moose Jaw Warriors. Tom did manage to score the only goal as the Regina Pats.

Dylan and many of the other Warriors have had a chance to see the new game and of course, play as themselves!

Tuesday Morning Tidbits

Good morning after the long weekend!

No rest for the Warriors on the holiday Monday. The entire team was down at Connor Park for the Season Ticket Holder BBQ and straight from there went to the Civic Center for power skating with Double Shift Conditioning.

This week a some Warriors will be flying out of Moose Jaw to all corners of North America for NHL Rookie Camps. While they are away, the young Warriors will battle against the Saskatoon Blades. The Blades were heading into the season with a TON of over ager's. They moved one to Prince George last week. They are in a similar situation as Moose Jaw with having to carefully select 3 20 year olds. They have many players headed to NHL camps as well.

Troy Brouwer was in town last week and took some time to skate with the Warriors. The Stanley Cup champion will also return to Chicago in the coming weeks to get the pre-season underway.

Season ticket numbers are still on the rise.... less than 30 to go to reach the 2,200 mark.

Work on the Warriors new website continues this week.... launch coming soon! The new website will have more in depth player profiles, better graphics, excellent video and a VERY cool design.

NHL 11 should hit stores today.... you getting one?
