Spencer Edwards Makes Stops at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital
This morning Spencer Edwards visited the ped's wing of the Moose Jaw Union Hospital. The patients ranged from as young as three to teenagers. One special little girl was leaving only moments after Spencer's visit to be air lifted to Saskatoon. Others were just in for a few days, but were over joyed to have Spencer Edwards stop to chat and sign autographs.
Spencer played a couple games of go-fish with one lucky gal, who is recovering from surgery. She was quite excited to beat Spencer in both rounds of the card game. Guests in the paed's room are often given Warriors tickets to use once they are feeling all better.
The Warriors/McDonalds room in the the paed's ward is always in use and by the sounds of things is the most popular room to be in. At the end of the hall in the wing, a very special Warriors Christmas tree sits. YARA Belle Plaine were kind enough to donate it to the hospital after bidding on it at Festival of Trees.
A big thank you to Heather Seagall, Head Nurse at the MJUH for helping organize the visits and to allow us to bring "Captains Care" to Moose Jaw.

Captain's Care
For a child spending days in the hospital, it can be scary, not very fun and hard on the parents. The Warriors understand how tough hospital visits can be and want to help brighten a sick kid’s day while spending time in the Moose Jaw Union Hospital.
Thanks to this year’s Captain Spencer Edwards’ passion for kids and a goal to bring the program to the fore front, sick kids in Moose Jaw will be visited by Spencer throughout the 10/11 hockey season.
Spencer wants the “Captain’s Care” program to not only be something he does this season, but a program that will continue on for years to come and be passed on from Captain to Captain.
The Warriors are working in partnership with the Moose Jaw Union Hospital and the Moose Jaw Hospital Foundation to make this program a success.
Last season, the Warriors and McDonald’s restaurant put the finishing touches on the “Warriors/McDonalds” hospital room in the Paediatrics Ward. The Warriors look forward to visiting the kids recovering in the special room as well as all those spending time in a hospital bed.

Warriors Speak about Fighting and Bullying at John Chisholm School
This morning Spencer Edwards, Dylan McIlrath and Jesse Paradis spoke to the students at John Chisholm School (an alternate school for students to transistion into or back into the school system). This morning's topic covered fighting and bullying.
The players spoke on hockey fights vs real fighting, the consequences and reasons for fighting. The overall message was to show the students that there are other ways of dealing with differences and anger than fighting. Not only are hockey fights in a supervised enviornment, the ultimate outcome differs greatly.
The players gave suggestions to avoid disagreements, discourage bullying and to understand the reality of hockey fights. With the help of Dylan McIlrath, explaining "rules" of fighting or common etiquette which includes "heavy weights" only fighting each other in a willing battle. Although these young men "fight" on the ice, off the ice it is a different story and the "fighters" do have a level of respect for each other.
The players spoke on the idea of fighting to change momentum of the game and of course controlling emotions in situations that would be detrimental to engage in a fight and take a pentalty. The players also spoke on being respectful and safe while on the ice. The main concepts were related to situations the students may face in terms of bullying and dealing with confrontation.
The Warriors visit the students at John Chisholm School each month and touch on different topics like team work, rules and today's topic fighting/bullying.

Twenty-year-old defenseman Travis Hamonic is expected to make his NHL debut on Wednesday night when the Islanders faceoff against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Like any other young player, Hamonic was thrilled to get the call
“I was actually sitting on my couch,” Hamonic said. “I live with three other guys back in Bridgeport. One of my roommates (Sound Tigers goaltender Kevin Poulin) kind of joked around and looked at his phone and said, ‘I think you just got called up.’ So, I kind of got bug-eyed there for a second, ran up to my room and checked my phone, had a couple of missed phone calls, so I called my coach back up in Bridgeport.”
Immediately, Hamonic got on the phone to St. Malo, Manitoba to tell his mother and brother the good news, but the youngster is wise beyond his years and knows that keeping a level head will be a key to his success in the NHL.
“There’s going to be a lot of excitement and a lot of nerves,” Hamonic said about making his debut. “But, for me, I just want to make sure I go into the game playing calm and – just knowing that I got here doing what I’ve been doing. I really don’t want to get out of my comfort zone.”
Hamonic will be the seventh youngest defenseman to play in the National Hockey League this season, although Alexander Urbom (New Jersey Devils) and Nick Leddy (Chicago Blackhawks) are currently playing in the American Hockey League.
Despite his age, Islanders interim head coach Jack Capuano knows that Hamonic is ready as he coached the defenseman in 15 games with Bridgeport this season before he got the call up to the NHL himself.
“He has good size,” Capuano said. “I’ve never coached a team where we’ve had five right-hand defensemen, but besides being a young prospect that shoots the puck extremely well, he plays physical and has come a long way the first month-and-a-half or two in Bridgeport. He activates, and he’ll join the rush. Hopefully, his nerves are where they need to be and he can just go out and have fun.”
Recalled from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Tuesday morning, Hamonic has made an outstanding debut in the American Hockey League. The rookie leads all Sound Tigers defensemen in scoring with seven points (2 goals, 5 assists) in his first 19 professional games.
“I think, whether it’s the American League, Junior, or the NHL I think whenever the game’s being played on the ice, it’s the same hockey game,” Hamonic said. “For me, I just want to go out there and make sure that I do what I do. I’m going to be keeping it simple out there, using my body and my skating ability to my advantage out there. Hopefully I can make some sort of difference.”

Selected by the Islanders in the second round (53rd overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, the defenseman has had a few years of conditioning under his belt as he’s played the last four seasons in the Western Hockey League.
Last season, Hamonic earned 44 points (scoring 11 goals and 33 assists) in 41 regular season games, splitting the season with the Moose Jaw Warriors and the Brandon Wheat Kings. The defenseman added 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 15 games during the Memorial Cup Playoffs with Brandon.
Playing in the WHL, Hamonic was one of the larger players. But playing amongst 17 and 18-year-olds is much different than playing against men in the AHL or NHL, especially since Hamonic is a physical player that likes to use the body. As a result, the rookie spent his off season working extremely hard to strengthen his 6’2” 208-pound frame.
“I knew coming into the summer this was going to be a big season for me,” Hamonic said. “I really worked hard in the gym, both on and off the ice. Off the ice was not so much conditioning as strength building. I knew whether it was in the NHL or the AHL level, I would be playing against men.”
While he’s only been playing professional hockey for less than two months, Hamonic said that he has learned how to use his body better, he’s better at joining the rush and he’s built up his confidence, especially since he’s been playing a lot of minutes.
“It was a big learning curve and I’m glad I had that opportunity to really develop my game, but I’m ready to make an impact here in the NHL,” Hamonic said.
The best part of playing in his first NHL game will be sharing the experience with his mother and brother.
“They’re really looking forward to (my debut),” Hamonic said. “This is as big for them as it is for me right now because they’ve really supported me throughout the way. And obviously with my father not being here anymore, passing away 10 years ago, they’ve really been there every step of the way. It’s a big moment for me, but probably bigger for my family.”

The Warriors faced off with the Calgary Hitmen in their first meeting at the Crushed Can this regular season. Hitmen got on the board first a goal from Jimmy Bubnick. At 6:57, Dylan Hood put one away on the power play to tie the game at one a piece. Spencer Edwards made it a 2-1 game. With one final goal from the Hitmen before the end of the first from Justin Kirsch the score would be 2-2.

FORMER TEAM MATES SET TO BATTLE SUNDAY
Newly aquired Cody Beach |
Earlier on in the season, the Warriors sent 19 year old Riley Reinbolt to the Hitmen, also a Calgary native. Another factor in Sunday's game is former Warriors goal tender Brandon Glover. Glover chose to leave the team in September and was added into the trade deal on Thursday. Many expect Glover to be the starting goal tender come Sunday night.
Warriors Assistant Captain Quinton Howden will join the team in Brandon tonight after a 2 point showing at the Subway Super Series in Kamloops/Prince George. Howden played along side two current Hitmen stars in 19 year old Jimmy Bubnick and Matt Mackenzie.
Dylan McIlrath returned to Moose Jaw after a short trip to New York on Wednesday for an MRI. McIlrath's return to the line up is still pending. Sixteen year old defensemen Travis Brown will be joining the Warriors line up for the weekend. Cody Beach and Mackenzie Royer joined the team for practice yesterday and are expected to be in the line up this weekend as well.
A little reminder off the ice this Sunday.... it is time to turn in the Operations Christmas Child boxes that have been available at Warriors home games. You have a great chance of winning a signed 3rd jersey if you bring in your present.

HOWDEN SCORES IN WHL'S SHOOT OUT LOSS TO RUSSIANS
Kamloops, B.C. – Russia pulled off a 7-6 victory in a shootout over Team WHL in Game 5 of the 2010 SUBWAY Super Series on Wednesday night in Kamloops, B.C.
The victory improves the Russians to 3-1-1 versus the CHL through five games of the series.
Team WHL looked to have control of the game after taking a 6-3 lead in the third period on power play goals less than a minute apart from the Regina Pats’ Jordan Weal and Saskatoon Blades’ Curtis Hamilton. However, the Russians stormed back with three goals in a 1:42 span to tie the game at 6-6 and send it to the shootout.
Sergei Kalinin, the Russian side’s Player of the Game, scored just 38 second after Hamilton had made it 6-3. Maxim Kitsyn – on the power play – and Artem Voronin followed with goals 46 seconds apart to knot up the contest.
Brandon Herrod of the Prince Albert Raiders was named Team WHL’s Player of the Game, scoring the lone goal in the second period while making his presence felt throughout the game for the hosts.
Carter Ashton of the Pats, Quinton Howden of the Moose Jaw Warriors, Stefan Elliott of the Saskatoon Blades also scored for Team WHL, who finished 3-for-6 on the power play in the contest.
Daniil Sobchenko, Artemiy Panarin and Anton Burtasov scored for the Russians, who also went 3-for-6 on the power play. Burtasov also netted the shootout winner for Russia.
Emil Garipov turned aside 40 of 44 shot she faced through 56:24 of action and was beaten just once on four Team WHL shootout attempts to claim the victory after replacing starter Dmitry Shikin, who allowed two goals on three shots through the first 3:36 of the opening frame.
Kent Simpson made 27 saves in regulation for Team WHL, and was beaten on three of four Russian shootout attempts to take the loss.
Under the point system for the tournament, a regulation victory is worth 3 points, a shootout win is worth 2 points, and a shootout loss is worth 1 point. The Russians currently sit with 9 points through five games while the CHL has 6 points. A regulation victory for Team WHL in the series finale will create a 9 point tie, at which point a five player shoot-out will determine 2010 Subway Super Series winner.

Over 200,000 Canadian men, women and children suffer from Crohn’s and Colitis this painful disease. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are the two most common forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). There are many individuals right here in Moose Jaw living with both Crohn’s and Colitis.

For the Hurricanes
Last Game: The Lethbridge Hurricanes had a pair of comebacks in the third but fell 3-2 in overtime to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night. The Hurricanes battled a solid Wheaties lineup all night as Brandon tallied the lone goal through the first and second periods to hold a 1-0 lead. Lethbridge goaltender Brandon Anderson had another solid outing as he posted 27 saves through the first two periods to keep the Canes in it - Anderson would finish the night with 32 saves total. The Hurricanes finally found themselves on the board in the third as Mark Reners tallied his third of the season just 1:34 into the final frame to tie the score at 1-1. Assisting on his goal was rookie Adam Henry who joined the team in Brandon to start in place of the suspended Cason Machacek. Machacek was slapped with a 1 game suspension after Wednesday's game against Calgary and will return to action tomorrow in Moose Jaw. The Wheaties would take the lead once again however as they tallied with eight minutes gone in the third to make it 2-1. But these Lethbridge Hurricanes refused to fold once again as they replied with another goal from Reners - this time on the power play to tie the game for the second time. The Hurricanes power play would go 1 for 3 on the night for yet another solid outing as of late while the penalty kill did it's job holding the Wheaties to 0 for 4 with the man advantage. Finally, aftr earning their single point the Canes were unable to stifle the Brandon offence as Scott Glennie notched an OT winner to save the bonus point for the home team.

Shoot Out Showdown for the 6th Straight Warriors Win
The Warriors made it six wins in a row at the Civic Center Sunday night, stealing a 2-1 decision against the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds. Star goaltender and NHL draft pick of the Colorado Avalanche, Calvin Pickard was a force between the iron for the T-birds. Warriors starting goaltender, Thomas Heemskerk was outstanding on the night.
First period would be a battle between goalies, with no scoring left on the board. Second period would bring on the T-birds first goal of the night from Marcel Noebels at 11:02 on the power play. Dallas Ehrhardt would look to spark his team at 12:45, throwing a punishing fist fest against Jacob Doty.
The third period would still see the tribe scoreless with Pickard shutting down countless chances. Finally at 14:08 of the third, twenty year old Dylan Hood would give the Warriors the first marker of the night and an important one at that. Each team wouldn’t be able to capitalize the reminder of the third or in over time.
To a shoot out we would go. Heemskerk vs Pickard for the 2 points. Warriors Antonin Honejsek started things off but would be denied. Up next for Seattle, Burke Gallimore. He would go high over Heemskerk. Brendan Rowinski faced Calvin Pickard next but would not be able to sneak one past. Marcel Noebels, who had the lone goal for Seattle would punch one right into Heemskerk’s glove. Assistant Captain Quinton Howden would have the next try at Pickard, a player he has seen at many team Canada events, Howden would go top shelf, off of Pickard’s back and in! Luke Lockhart would be stopped and the Warriors steal the win with a score of 2-1.
Warriors went 0/8 on the PP against the nearly unstoppable Calvin Pickard. The Warriors were 5/6 on the PK. A big advantage to the tribe was the truck himself, Dylan McIlrath who laid out hit after bone crushing hit. Moose Jaw fired an incredible 45 shots on net and Heemskerk faced a solid 30 in the win.
Warriors have a bit of time to recuperate and will be back at home for 3 games in 4 nights starting on Friday.
